Confirmation of Amy Barret will have profound impact

on my retirement plans.

My two adult children live in poverty on minimum wage jobs. Both are dependent on us for financial support.

Both are un-insurable in the private market with pre-existing conditions.

Both are dependent on expensive medications.

When the ACA is killed, they will be exposed to health risks. If I can find risk pool insurance, it will eat much of my retirement savings. Without insurance, we will risk a choice of bad health outcomes or bankruptcy.

I AM FURIOUS that we need to deal with this again.

If the ACA is overturned, I expect Biden and the new Senate to kill the Filibuster to quickly pass a Universal Health Care plan. Medicare for All seems to be the fastest, most comprehensive approach.

I think the ruling will come sooner than summer. No later than May, but possibly March or April.

And I am a cancer survivor

I have an ACA plan that’s not perfect but it’s better than no plan

I will be sweating this out for the next 18 months and am furious that the pricks in the GOP don’t want me to have health insurance. I say fuck them all.

Most of the uber, crazy religious that I’ve known are horrible parents. The kids grow up scarred and ill equipped to deal with life. They typically leave the nest as soon as possible and experience a period of living wildly to try to compensate for all they’ve been denied.

the federal courts, rocket up the docket trail to SCOTUS, who will invalidate it without a doubt.

6-3 hardcore RW is going to erase SO much our heads will spin.

IF Rump steals the POTUS again, and the Rethugs hold the Senate for 2020 and 2022, there is damn good chance it goes to 7-2 hardcore RW (Breyer wants out), plus Thomas might retire and be replaced by a younger model of thug. Do not forget Sotomayor has really bad type-1 chronic diabetes too. In the worst nightmare scenario, we could be reduced to Kagan alone at some point down the road if the wheels ALL fall off.

If (more likely) Biden wins, BUT we do not take back the Senate (less likely if Biden wins), they will NEVER vote on a replacement nominated by him as long as they hold the majority. I will be somewhat surprised if we ever see a SCOTUS nomination confirmed by an opposing party-controlled Senate again. We would be INSANE to confirm another Rethug SCOTUS nominee after the shit the Rethugs have pulled and will now pull.

We have definitely hit a horrific inflection in American history.

The new rule is that Presidents get SCOTUS appointments if, and only if, their party controls the Senate. That MUST be the new rule. I can’t see it playing out any other way.

If so, we must expand the SCOTUS. With 15, 17, 19, or 21 justices, one or two vacancies on the Court won’t drive us to national crises like our recent vacancies have. Expanding the Court will create judicial stability and increase confidence in the judicial branch.

I am NOT saying that all of these will balk at it, but even if we flip 8 of the 11 most likely to flip seats (so have a 54-46 majority), if 5 of them say nope, then we are fucked. If 4 say no, then it will come down to Biden via his proxy vote, VP Harris.

here the the 20 most likely to say no, 2 already have said they oppose it (in bold), so if we take it back by just a 51-49 majority, it is already dead in the water unless those two are persuaded to change their mind

bear in mind, at least 5 or so have already said they will not even support getting rid of the filibuster

btw, if you see some on here who have said they WOULD support it (SCOTUS expansion), then please tell me and I amend the list

Arizona Kyrsten Sinema (I think she is likely to oppose it, she and Manchin are the two most conservative in the Dem Caucus)
California Dianne Feinstein
Colorado Michael Bennet
Delaware Tom Carper
Delaware Chris Coons
Illinois Dick Durbin
Maine Angus King
Michigan Debbie Stabenow
Michigan Gary Peters
Montana Jon Tester
Nevada Catherine Cortez Masto
Nevada Jacky Rosen
New Hampshire Jeanne Shaheen
New Hampshire Maggie Hassan
Pennsylvania Bob Casey Jr.
Vermont Patrick Leahy
Virginia Mark Warner
Virginia Tim Kaine
West Virginia Joe Manchin
probably Hickenlooper and perhaps more of the new ones who win

Joe has already come out against expanding the Court, afaik, but Joe is flexible. With enough outrage (and VP Harris’ voice in favor of expansion), perhaps we can get it done.

So I hope.

PS—You would make a great whip, and no. I am not aware of a Senator who has (yet) announced a position different from what you have described.
