A little background: For a couple of months I've been going on walks around my neighborhood to get a little exercise. Once or twice a day I do a round trip of about two miles, varying the route as much as I can, but I'm always within about a one-mile radius of my house. It's a middle-class neighborhood of older homes (1885-1930, I'd guess), with lots of trees (even a few very large American elms that survived the Dutch Elm blight of the '70s) and front-yard gardens. I've enjoyed getting a good look at the different styles of architecture and the things people have been doing with their gardens. And now there are the lawn signs.
When the lawn signs have started appearing I started taking photos of some of the cleverest or most inspiring election-related signs about a week ago and posting them here. I've lost count of the BLM and George Floyd signs since those are on about every other lawn, but the Biden/Harris signs and RBG tributes as well as signs exhorting people to vote are proliferating, too. I realize that I live in a blue bubble so I don't have to see Trump signs, but I really do enjoy seeing that my neighbors are engaged. People are adding new ones as fast as I can collect them. I've never seen anything quite like this in the 30+ years I've lived here.
So here are the signs du jour:
I've seen several of these:
Cool signs by a kid:
A church sign:

It dares to be light-hearted at a very gloomy time. And LORDY do we need some of that. Whatever it is that evokes a smile.
I havent seen this level of just plain bummed out since the Kennedy assassination. Old enough to remember.
Thereve other really bad moments. Like when space shuttle Challenger blew up 72 seconds into its flight.
The bush v Gore debacle.
Kent State.
Hurricane Katrina.
Sandy Hook.
And Las Vegas.
And the nightclub in Orlando, FL.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland FL.
The theatre in Aurora, CO.
Virginia Tech.
Virginia Beach.
The El Paso Walmart.
San Bernardino, CA.
The church in Sutherland Springs, TX.
Etc.
Thereve been bad times. But THIS... In the last few days - on top of the last few years...
I dont remember hearing or seeing anything like this. Where people are in a funk. And name yer funk. There are several big ones taking swats at us at the same time. And while youre already feeling glum yourself, you think of how many other unhappy people you know or have heard from or commiserated with - who you feel bad about, too, because they too are down in the dumps.
Many of us are soldiering onward through it, and trying to make the best of it. But Dear Lord I cant remember a season of bummer like this one. Not in decades.

(32,626 posts)love the chalk one you had, but my fave of these is the home-made ones on the door, and the "and also Joe Biden". You're going to have quite the collection of unique signage.

(16,980 posts)I've been taking pictures of signs on my morning walk. There are plenty of "Black lives matter" signs about, plus some of the "Science is real" sign and variations. The Biden signs started appearing before the convention and now I'm seeing Biden-Harris versions.
