My daughter lost her husband to pancreatic cancer in 2009. She had great job in the government and they had been doing well until his illness struck, costing them heavy medical bills despite having pretty good insurance. He husband was out of work for 17 months prior to his death so the loss of his income drove her into debts along with me trying to keep things going. Shortly after that she lost her job which was a pretty good security position. Here is the thing. She lost her job because her security clearance came back as a high debt risk no matter she was paying her bills but her debt to income ratio was out of whack. Thus she lost her security clearance, had to get a job at lesser pay and ultimately had to foreclose on her mortgage and come live with me.
I am livid learning about Trump's huge debts, his scamming his taxes, and his cavalier attitude toward struggling citizens. What my family has gone through since my daughter lost her husband and her job is unbelievable but we are digging our way back. And she had to make all kinds of arrangements with the IRS to pay off what she owed them...can you believe it She had asked for extensions and payment arrangements right after her husband died but the turmoil was just too much and she fell behind in three IRS payments. I just can't believe that someone with the kind of money owed by a person who has been documents as bankrupt can be President and others around him like his children can hold security clearance and operate at the highest levels of our government. There is absolutely two Americas, maybe three. Not good to wake up and find out your in the one that gets shit on daily.

(1,040 posts)Sorry that your daughter and you had to go through this. My ex (career military) was up for a Top Secret clearance, they went through our finances with a fine tooth comb. Yes, it is completely hypocritical that someone owing this much money (including debts to foreign interests) should have the nuclear codes and hold security clearances (along with his family).
This is another narrative that needs to be pushed HARD -- that Trump and his organization are a danger to this country's national security.

(5,801 posts)How is it that you think Warren came closest to messaging about things like this.
Hillary warned us about ALL of it.

Or, as Lindsey Graham put it in 2016:
"Hold the tape."

(81,220 posts)I think it was a warning about the kinds of things the donald wouldn't think twice about doing to exploit the rest of us. But then again, I'm already hard-wired toward giving HRC a broad benefit-of-doubt. Eerie. She just keeps getting proved right. (Wonder if her secret middle name is Cassandra?)

(19,851 posts)the same review process that the others of us do. Had trump undergone the thorough review others of us have gone through, he would not have qualified for a security clearance.
It should be a requirement for anyone running for president to first undergo the review process for a TS security clearance. If it isn't granted, then their name can't go on the ballot.
Hugs to your daughter for all she has endured and to you for supporting her.
future people running for president should undergo security clearance AND release their taxes prior to being put on ballots!!

(16,646 posts)When people talk about the system being "rigged", this is what they mean. The system is designed to punish the "losers" and reward the "winners". And in fact it makes it harder for the "losers" to "pull themselves up by the boot straps" and yet alternately allow the "winners" to get by easier, even when they make mistakes. Golden parachutes are just one example. A top executive that fell into the problems like you would not get fired for losing their clearance. They'd get a bonus and sent on their way with life long benefits.

(275 posts)sorry to hear about your daughter's unbelievable situation... maybe if she had hired a tax attorney to reduce the IRS debt, it may have reduced the amount.
it is really a horrible way that IRS is running - ordinary people have to pay their IRS debts, but the rich get can away with paying hardly anything in taxes by hiring high priced tax attorneys that reduce the taxes down to nearly zero compared to normal people's amount of taxes!
IRS has been broken for a long time - and the rich like it that way!

(1,406 posts)I hope there are some new laws passed that remove credit history as part of the job review. And to make it worse, the credit report consideration is OPTIONAL so they can use it against you if they want to, but employers don't have to use it. Guess who gets screwed with credit reporting. Otherwise, Ivanka and even Trump would not have been able to get a security clearance. It akin to red-lining in banking.

(1,151 posts)Why anyone American should have to go bankrupt and lose her job because her husband is dying of cancer is beyond enraging to me. And then to have to beg the IRS to help you out while you're grieving such tremendous loss is insult to injury. Then to see that the orange POS squatting in the WH thinks rules don't apply to him is
I'm so sorry for your loss and your reasons to be livid.

(296 posts)Is what thousands (if not millions) of other citizens are about to face because of COVID19. Loss of income, huge medical debts, long term health issues limiting ability to work again, loss of good credit ratings, loss of ability to secure loans, bankruptcy and foreclosures.
you don't know about it until it either happens to you or you have relatives/friends that it happens too..
