The last time there were such fraudulent issues revealed on a tax return was when Nixon was president. That's why every candidate since then has released their own. Can the U. S. mandate that candidates release their tax returns so we don't get stuck with another corrupt president?

If we are submitted to background checks before being accepted for a job why should a presidential candidate not submit his tax returns in order to be leader of the free world.

YES, turn over the financial records including tax returns or forget about running.

(32,693 posts)Can you imagine what will happen when an articulate, good looking and charismatic criminal comes along and does the same thing trump has done?
I want Congress to spend the first 6 months or so tying up every loose end related to voting rights, the Electoral College, and requirements for running for office.
Complete divestment from investments and businesses is also a must.
And all house and senate members too.

(5,524 posts)I wonder if it would survive as constitutional. The constitution has specific requirements to be eligible to be president so adding one could be problematic.
Still should be done and challenge the bastards to make a case against it.

(18,402 posts)It hasnt been an issue for for 46 years, because there has been transparency via candidates voluntarily releasing returns. Trump is the first. It needs to be incorporated into law somehow.
We need to know if candidates are (a) honest, and (b) uncompromised.
In the end, though, short of a legal requirement, any candidate who fails to release their returns will live to regret it in the end: nothing is truly private anymore, and besides, failure to do so will immediately raise suspicions that something bad is being hidden.
Far lower administration members are required to be vetted in this way. A potential president should be too.

If or when somebody asks why, just say Trump. Fill in the blanks if they ask for them.

I would say release at least 15 years but more likely more .
The Constitution sets the requirements for President and it does not require the release of taxes.
It would take a Constitutional amendment. 2/3 of each house and 2/3 of the states. Aint gonna happen.
