I'd like to add the work "properly" after mask.

I can't begin to tell you how many idiots around my area have that mask on properly when they go through the door, and like children, as soon as they're out of sight of the door person who's monitoring mask wearing (I'm in Michigan where they are required by law) they're wandering around the store with it under their chin. It's like they have this attitude of ha ha, we're getting away with something or owning the libs.

Apartment complex. Everyone wears a mask here. Mask up to check your mail, take out your trash, walk your dog. Office staff and maintenance crew. I do a mask and a face shield when I go off site. As far as I know, no one here has been infected. When all the amenities were shut down (pool, exercise room, business center, craft room) in March, disposable masks were left on every apartments door knob.

almost nobody here bothers with a mask or social distancing, not even the maintenance crew, although the office people wear them. During the shutdown, a neighbor down the hall from me was having visitors constantly in and out all day, every day, until people complained to the office. The office sent the neighbor a warning letter that she could still get evicted after the eviction ban is over. She finally stopped having nonstop visitors.

How I wish I still had a house instead of an apartment.

I am the odd one out here, wearing a mask whenever I leave the apartment to take out trash or to go to the laundry room. I use tissues to press the elevator buttons and open the doors. I change shoes when I come into my apartment. They think I'm "too cautious" and I don't care.

I usually take advantage of the early hour for seniors, and most of those customers are wearing masks properly. Happened to stop by their other store in town Wednesday at about 10 AM. Masks at "half-mast" or worse throughout the store.

For the first time in many months, I stopped by the men's room at a store and saw a poster telling and showing people how to properly wear a mask.

Costco displays that poster in the restroom. Why don't they post that sign at the main entrance?!?

Usually, when I see half-masked people in public (or -- more and more often -- in Publix), I say "Mask, please!" loudly and clearly to the slacker. They almost always correct their mistake, so they know what's right and what's wrong!

Of course we have a lot of shitheads who battled against it, but when most of the businesses started requiring it, thats when we started seeing our numbers decrease. I'd say 80-90% in Lowes & walmart are wearing them now. Wasnt the case in June.
We had very little impact from Labor Day. Current hospitalizations are less than 1/2 what they were in July. Our local school system has been open for 2 months now; so far none of the predicted disasters have materialized. As a matter of fact, they'll be on fall break in another week.

We'll see what cooler weather brings

I completely understand your sentiment, and with Trump specifically and people like McConnell, I agree.

I was brought up Catholic so I have it engrained in me that my challenge is to "Love your enemy". I have pondered and struggled with that for a long time, and finally, I do not practice Catholicism any longer. While that command has been the subject of debate and thought for a long time, the concept of forgiveness and reconciliation is somewhat easier to manage.

Forgiveness is not about relieving the offender of their wrong doing. It is about the victim setting aside their pain and moving forward. Reconciliation is a repair of relationships. BUT the key to reconciliation is that the offender acknowledges the wrong doing and makes a good faith effort to correct the offending behaviors going forward and an earnest commitment to not reoffending.

Mary Trumps response is a good one. She knows her uncle. She knows that Trump is incapable of remorse for the damage he inflicts on others. She knows that he will not be humbled or changed in any way.

I agree that we should not forget Trump's actions, nor the actions of Republicans that have abetted him.

We should however, take care not to turn into the cruel monsters that inhabit the Republican Party. It is difficult being a liberal/progressive. We have to balance a lot of complex and sometimes conflicting emotions and directives. Being Trump or a Trump Republican is easier because you are only looking out for what you can get for yourself, and what you can get away with.

We have to focus on holding people accountable and not allowing the people who have so abused their power to be near decision making, but we also need to focus on repairing the damage that has been done, and holding on to rancor has a tendency to blur our vision.

I think that what sets people with our mindset apart from conservatives in this regard is that we reflect and question ourselves. When emotions are running high, it can be difficult, but we seemed to find a way to step back and look at ourselves.

For the record, I have always thought that it was a mistake not to investigate Bush and Cheney for lying us into Iraq. LBJ should have gone after Nixon for the Chennault Affair and Reagan and his administration should have gone down for Iran-Contra. Democrats do have a history of "moving on" for the "good of the country" but it has allowed Republicans to continuously flout our laws and traditions.

We can hold people accountable and still maintain our humanity.
