(90,561 posts)They held meetings in their homes, some in secrecy, and held suppers where all were treated as equals. They were leaders, too. In the Roman catacombs, among portraits of early bishops, are some women whose names have been changed to the masculine form or effaced.
St Paul was a misogynist, sad to say, and had a huge influence on the development of the church as time went on: I think it was he who told women to submit to their husbands. But note that he came after Jesus, and nowhere in the teachings of Jesus do you find this misogyny.
If the Federalists are such freaking textualists and originalists, they might start there.

(24,759 posts)Taken in context of 1st Century Grec-Roman law, the "submission" exhortation was a reminder for early Christians to behave within the law, for which they had no power to change or defy. So St. Paul comes off as a misogynist by current standards.
So, his advice for wives to submit to their husbands was fair for its day. What those fundies conveniently omit is that St. Paul also advised husbands to love their wives and not abuse them.

Actually, no one should be submitting to anyone in a partnership, but wouldn't it be shocking to see an article about that?
