By Torie Bosch

On Sunday, Jan. 8., New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was speaking at a Romney for President rally in New Hampshire when he was interrupted by some female hecklers. Its difficult to make out exactly what Christies critics were yelling, but its something to do with jobs going down. Ever the class act, Christies response: You know, something may be going down tonight, but it aint going to be jobs, sweetheart. He then goes on to insult the women by saying that if they were from Jersey, they wouldnt be so silly as to think that his policies dont support job creation. (Thats the way to win New Hampshire voters for Romney at the upcoming primary: insult them by saying that Jersey voters are smarter!)
The video, which does not make Christie look great, wasnt some hidden-camera gotcha depicting a private moment, a la the 2006 macaca video that may have cost George Allen his Senate seat. Rather, it was uploaded to the New Jersey GOPs YouTube account. They seem to think his remark about going down is a zinger, something to be proud of, rather than recognizing it as flagrantly demeaning, even misogynistic. How would Christie have responded to male protesters saying the same thing? Probably not by changing the subject to what acts they perform in the bedroom. His handlers should be apologizing for the remark, not promoting it.

(32,079 posts)I have a hunch he may wind up as VP on the repug ticket. I think the Dems are smart in biding their time on this one. Let them commit him to the ticket before this little episode is made more widespread. Otherwise, they'll be dealing with someone else.

If it gives some man the vapors to have it pointed out? Then "Oh woe is he." *shrugs shoulders*

(12,530 posts)You've overgeneralized to the point of insult, which caused you to miss the point.
thanks.

(31,810 posts)I know for a fact that even at DU - the size of a womans tatas and ass is her value. Her sexuality is her value.
Did I miss something? Did that change? Because lately - that's all a lot of women are reading around here.
Seriously - Gay Beauty Pageant Winner: Awesome.
Woman who wants equal pay regardless of the size of her breasts? Bitch
We've heard you Guy's Guys loud and clear.
And you will NOT shut me up by BULLYING me anymore than that fat ass with Moobs will. If I need a muzzle - then he needs a bra.

(12,530 posts)And you're still wrong.
Point to any post of mine, ANY post, since the year 2001, that shows misogyny. I'm not bullying you--you'd know if I was. Carry on with your histrionics.

This is all in good fun. Relax!

(12,530 posts)And no, it's not all in good fun. It's not even fun, except maybe to you and the people you're trying to impress on a different website. Don't ever again call me honey, sweetie, or any other condescending name.

(12,530 posts)I did nothing to merit the game you admitted you were playing with me, and with the truth. You've admitted that your posts were not serious, that you were just using them to get attention on Facebook. In the process of running your little game, you were extremely rude. You lied (at least you admitted you were lying--thanks for that small piece). You were very sexist, and acted like the polar opposite of what you claimed you were inveighing against. And you chose me to teach a lesson to. Why did you do this, when I stated an non-controversial, easily-verifiable fact to seabeyond? No judgment on my part, no name-calling, just me telling seabeyond that this is not the new norm. My statement is just as true this afternoon as it was this morning. I don't need your lesson-teaching with "you just found out....", and I don't appreciate it. Pound sand. You have no idea who I am, what I'm about, or what I learned/when I learned it, and as such, you'd better back up if you think you're qualified to give me life lessons. If you're at a place in your life where you think this kind of thing is all good sport, good fun, then I'd say you're at a maturity level that I refuse to deal with. Life is short. I'm living the remainder of mine without your presence.

(1,532 posts)That kind of overreaction is quite often an indicator that a nerve has been touched.
I think you're sounding like a bully, frankly.
Oh, and yes it IS a norm for many, many men. The reason it got written up as a NEWS story is not because it's atypical, but because it was a popular politician (i.e., someone who's already NEWSworthy) doing it -- andin public! -- AND because it's WRONG.
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)That was my point, and it stands, just like it did yesterday.
It's NOT the norm. See if you can let that sink in, then go back and look at my original claim. You have less than nothing. Why less? Because you appear to be going out of your way to defend someone who acted in a fairly heinous manner, toward someone who said nothing wrong, and did nothing wrong.
guess who the bully was?
guess who lied?
guess who was using this as a joke at Facebook, with others "in the know"
guess who spoke in a completely sexist and condescending manner?
guess who got a post pulled?
Now, guess who made a simple, declarative, verifiable statement, without malice?
It's not your place to tell me how personally to take something. You're being offensive and boorish, and I would appreciate you stopping. The bully accusation is bullshit...that other individual tried to take that tack. I was not the attacker, I was the attacked. As they tell me, if you don't like something, alert on it. I did, and the original alert was shot down. Now I know better. Someone else got this other poster's post removed later in the day. What did you think about that one? Does sexism go only one way? Are you ok with "sweetie" and "honey" and "big man"? I'm not, and I'll be damned if I'm going to be counter-accused of bullying. Do you have any further questions I can answer for you?

(12,530 posts)You failed to answer the question that was asked of you. You're still engaging in sexual innuendo, which you really shouldn't do. You're even degrading women in your attempt to put words in my mouth.
If, in fact, you're doing all of this for your own amusement at another site, there's another word that describes you, and that word is liar. Destructive liar might be an even better way to say this--you really are causing a problem. And now that I hear none of this was serious to you, that you like to engage in attempted character assassination so that your other friends will think you're smart and clever, I think pretty poorly of you, your motives, and your word.

(36,827 posts)If a "large swath of so-called" women spoke this way about men I certainly wouldn't come to a place just to be offended all the time. So it sounds like you either come here to belittle men or you're just trying to broad brush an entire gender based on the actions of a few.

Just because you don't see it - how rape is good, a woman who is a prosti likes it, gay beauty pageant winner is a woman who knows her REAL value . . . Doesn't mean it's not going on.

(12,530 posts)Yes, I see you have protection here, so you can say whatever you want. This does not mean you're correct, however. In fact, you're demonstrably wrong. Why would the truth hurt the other user, if he's not one of the people you're talking about (and he is, since you smeared all men with your nasty little brush)? So, are you making an accusation, or aren't you? It's beyond time for you to have the courage of your convictions and say what the hell you mean. If you hate all men, have the courage to say so. If you don't, then you'd better start retracting some of the verbal garbage you've spewed here.

(12,530 posts)Do you understand what vapors are? Do you understand that there are approximately 3.5 billion men on the planet, and that not all of them talk to women and about women in terms of oral sex? Oh well. I guess you're just hysterical. I forgive you.

(36,827 posts)Why anyone would think the answer to men belittling women is women belittling men is beyond my understanding.
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)I was knocked down 5-1. I took exception to all men talking in the terms described above, and also took exception to being told I had the vapors. I did feel free to call the other poster hysterical after the alert was shelved, since that's what having "the vapors" actually means. Think well of me when my post is deleted anyway.

not so at all when fat fuck Christie insults all women like so many men do in so many ways and so many days, in so many movies, etc etc. here at du, in the workplace, all over the fucking place we have to hear this shit over and over and know that our daughters and sisters and mothers have to hear it too, that the definition of them is a real estate part of their bodies that some men hate so much it seems that's all they think about and that being a woman is the lowest possible creature on earth. well, except for when those parts they have can be bought, sold, brutalized, laughed at and invaded.

(5,865 posts)should be held accountable. I did not think the above referenced zinger was sexual when I heard it. I thought he was jokingly implying they were going to be "taken care of" a la "cement shoes". In either case, his remarks are disgusting and hurtful. In Iowa, he pulled the same tough guy talk as he jokingly threatened Iowa caucus voters. Joking or not, he glorifies a culture of crime, vulgarity and misery. And this man is VP material? Please.

In NJ (at least) to say "something's going down" is like saying "some crime's about to occur." Or "something bad's going to happen."
For example, here the phrased is used in an article about cliques at school.

(59,501 posts)Last year, I decided to do a tiny bit of analysis. It is difficult to really see how well a state is doing because of its own actions as there are so many variables beyond their control. So, I wanted to compare the results of a similar state - but with Democratic leaders. The national actions would be the same, so the differences would be because of state policies.
NJ is an affluent state with an abundance of jobs in R&D and in Finance. It is also a state where high school kids are among the top performing in the country. It also has a significant number of older urban centers that were once successful cities. Another state that could be described similarly is MA.
Since Governor Christie was elected in 2009, you can think of these two states as if they were testing the republican and the Democratic economic solutions. From two sources, here are the unemployment rates.
December 2009 (a month after Christie was elected - as a baseline): NJ - 10.0 MA - 9.3
December 2010 : : NJ - 9.1 MA - 8.2
May 2011: : NJ- 9.4 MA - 7.6
If you look at NY, also run by a Democratic governor, the results look like MA's. What is clear is that the cuts that Christie forced through have hurt the state of NJ.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=167&topic_id=4869&mesg_id=4875
Since I wrote that, the trends has continued.
November 2011 - NJ 9.1 MA - 7.0
http://www.bls.gov/web/laus/laumstrk.htm
Since Christie has been in office, NJ has fared far worse than Patrick's Massachusetts.

(1,734 posts)I grew up around there, and I say that all the time. "Something is going down" means generally that something is about to happen that will be notable. It's never used to denote oral sex. (That would be "someone" going down, right?).
