Santorum: Selling the Law to the Highest Bidder

It’s getting really hard to be topical.  In the issue of [em]New Yorker[/em] magazine dated January 9, 2012 – that’s today -- the lead article is about the rise of Newt Gingrich.[br /]
Newt who?  Newt Gingrich?  Is he the guy who thought that if he stuck four fingers between the buttons in his shirt, he actually became Napoleon?[br /]
(By the way, America, Newt Gingrich is very disappointed in you.  I just thought you should know that.)[br /]
But this note is not about Newt Gingrich; it’s about Rick Santorum.  Who remains topical until 8 p.m. tomorrow, when the polls close in New Hampshire.  Because New Hampshire Republicans are finding it difficult to square a Santorum state ban on contraception with the motto “Live Free or Die.”[br /]
But this note is not about contraception; it’s about weather forecasts.  Which are always topical.[br /]
Rick Santorum tried to ban weather forecasts.  Actually, not all weather forecasts.  Just government weather forecasts.[br /]
I realize that you could possibly be a little skeptical about that, so [a href="http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:s786:" target="_blank"]here is the bill, at the official Senate website[/a].  Sections 2(b) and 2(d) of the National Weather Services [sic] Duties Act of 2005, S. 786, 109th Cong., 1st Sess.[br /]
By the way, Santorum introduced this bill a few months after four different hurricanes hit Central Florida, where I live.  In one of those hurricanes, a big chunk of my roof collapsed, right into the living room.  So weather forecasts are sort of important in my community.  A matter of life and death, you might say.[br /]
Now you must be thinking, "Wow, that guy Santorum is a REAL conservative." Santorum recognizes that government weather forecasts are meteorological socialism; they are a serious infringement on your constitutional right not to know whether it will rain tomorrow.  Santorum sees that weather forecasts are a government takeover of the skies.  In fact, Santorum is such an astute and profound conservative thinker that he probably realizes that traffic lights are a government takeover of the roads.[br /]
But this note is not about traffic lights.  It’s about Rick Santorum and government weather forecasts.  And why Rick Santorum tried to ban them.[br /]
Here’s why.  It’s because AccuWeather is a commercial weather forecasting company, and AccuWeather employees gave Santorum more than $5,000 in campaign contributions. Then he introduced the bill.  Which subsequently and consequently led to Santorum being named as one of Congress’s “most corrupt politicians.”  Which is saying a lot.[br /]
I can picture the conversation:[br /]
AccuWeather lobbyist:  “Here is $5000 in bundled contributions from AccuWeather.  Now introduce a bill to ban government weather forecasts.”[br /]
Santorum:  “OK.  Sure.  Why not?  Whatever.  I love this cheesecake.”[br /]
And that is what I’ve seen over and over again.  This thing called “conservative ideology” has degenerated to the point where it exists simply to spew out rationalizations for something else entirely:  whatever the corporate lobbyists want.[br /]
A topic that will remain topical, I’m sure, well after the polls close in New Hampshire tomorrow night.[br /]
Courage,[br /]

I would call Santorum self-absorbed, but he is too obsessed with wanting to monitor other people's sexual behavior to call him that.

You are really smart ..... Harvard and what not.
You speak your mind and unlike the right wing you think about what you say first.
AND YOU HAVE MORE MONEY THAN GOD.

"I introduced that legislation totally independent of a $5,000 contribution. Private, for-profit weather monitoring and forecasting is actually something I deeply believe in."

There can only be a couple of conclusions to be drawn: Rick Santorum is a lying sack of shit, or he thinks Americans are irretrievably stupid. Oh, and Rick Santorum can be bought for $5,000.

we're going to proceed from here. The radical ideology of the Republicans needs to be exposed; Democrats dance around the topic, but most of them don't really get at the root of conservative thought and its influence on future policies. They want to give control of this country to corporations and they want to strip citizens of any redress against those powerful interests. Do Americans really want to re-live the Gilded Age? It's a conversation that we desperately need to have if we're ever going to get out of this funk. Even if Americans choose the dark side, at least we'll know we had a say in the matter.

free rein for since raygun - even before that in the rest of the world. They know that they have driven the car into the lake and it is sinking. They were wrong. But they think it is all because of the government interference - you know government took all the good jobs - like weather forcasting and feeding the poor etc.. Now they want their chance to prove their faulty methods will work if only they can have all those government jobs in their hands!

Are we really going to let them destroy government the way they have the economy?

Thank you Alan for this post. Praying for you to get back into congress. We need more people like you.

Not only for our citizens but did Santorum ever think that our military might need a non-private, governmental entity to provide an accurate and uninterrupted source of weather information, especially in time of war or when conducting other strategic activities vital to America's defense?

Our military, on the eve of some action like taking out Bin Laden, for example, can't afford to have some private weather entity withhold valuable information for, God knows whatever reason they may cite like, helping the U.S. military would interfere with their overseas business relations or it would "violate their rights to privacy". That's all we need on the eve of a military action. Our military bargaining with and begging a private commercial weather info provider for access to a forecast. No way!

Welcome back, Mr. Grayson!

That Santorum, or anybody in Congress for that matter, would actually write legislation for a mere $5,000 in campaign contributions.

Come on. $5,000? Seriously?

Even $50,000 is kinda chump change when it comes to Senate races. Even my 1 term Congresswoman from a moderate district in Kansas has a $1.5 million war chest. By 2005, Santorum had been in Congress for 14 years and the Senate for ten years. If he didn't have a $5,000,000 war chest, he'd be the worst fundraiser in the world.

The accusation that a Senator would actually write legislation for a mere .001% increase to his campaign war chest is just absurd. I don't buy it. I don't think anybody can be bribed with the moral equivalent of a penny.
