(14,708 posts)The red states will keep us permanently below that mark. Even if we get DC and PR, and we get 4 more dems (don't assume PR would elect straight dems), we wouldn't be close enough to make anyone sweat.
As we have seen, even irrefutable evidence will be dismissed on partisan grounds.
And the country is fickle. They may no more like a dem judicial juggernaut than we have liked a rethug one.
And the rethugs are counting on that. They wiill do everything they can to structurally damage both the economy and the gov to be sure we can't establish a recovery by '24. Then everyone from cruz to mitt to jr will be screaming to throw the bums out.
And it might just work. We need to be effective without giving them the rallying cries. Don't know how, but we can if we don't run to the lunatic fringe every chance we get.

(3,166 posts)The Republicans have been playing a long con with the Supreme Court - at least 20 years. Democrats need a long term goal to get at least 60 Senate seats.
That means we will have to start building from the ground up in some states that we have ignored for far too long, particularly in the South. I think we made a mistake by writing the South off for so long. That's how Trump managed to win West Virginia by 60 points.
In particular, the states of Georgia and NC should be the next ones to flip blue. A lot of people move from colder places to the South, so the population is growing. The South has a huge African-American population and fast-growing Latinx population as well.
The state of Mississippi SHOULD be a blue state. Almost 40% of the population is African-American, but it will take a lot of money and hard work to create a Democratic infrastructure in that state, and to deal with systemic racism and disenfranchisement in the state. The Dems in Mississippi have long been told that they have to be "Republican lite" in order to win elections. The day may come when that attitude will change.
It will take a long time, but it could happen in the age of Trump. He has driven more people to the Democratic side than ANY recent Dem politician!

(3,334 posts)The justices of the Supreme Court need to have a 15 year limit where 1/3 leave every 5 years. I think that would be the easiest, but still hard, part to change the Constitution. Also increase the number of justices to 15. All federal judges should only be allowed to serve a certain number of years.
