Biden camp quietly raises money for post-election court brawl

Biden officials are holding calls with big fundraisers to prepare for the possibility of lengthy, expensive legal fights after Election Day.

Joe Biden’s campaign fundraising efforts have quietly turned toward raising additional money for a possible post-Election Day legal fight with President Donald Trump that could stretch through November.

In recent calls, Biden allies and donors discussed preparations to counter potential lawsuits from Trump and his campaign, and they detailed how close results in key states could set off prolonged, expensive legal fights, according to two people who participated in those calls. If vote totals are close or contested, the funds would support the efforts of dozens of lawyers working for Biden’s campaign, including some who have already deployed to key battleground states as part of voter protection programs.

On one call with Biden’s Lawyers Committee, a donor group made up of attorneys, Biden aides told attendees how quickly the campaign expected litigation to flood the courts in the hours and days after the election, contending that Biden needed donors ready to support the effort immediately.

Democrats and Republicans have already been engaged in a multi-million dollar legal war for months, battling state by state over voting rules. And a half-dozen Biden bundlers and fundraisers described a pervasive feeling among the donor community that heavy fundraising would continue deep into November.

Before this year, I had never donated more than $1,000 to Dems in a campaign year. This year I budgeted $3,000--and wound up donating $5,000. It's gonna hurt, but like they said eighty years ago: "Winning a war takes millions; losing one takes everything you've got."
