Democrats debate fate of Trump probes if Biden wins

Democrats debate fate of Trump probes if Biden wins
By Olivia Beavers - 11/02/20 06:00 AM EST

House Democrats are weighing how to move forward with a flurry of ongoing probes and future investigations if President Trump loses on Tuesday.

The big question hanging over Democrats, who are expected to keep the majority in the House, is whether to lean into post-election investigations that could detract from their legislative priorities under a Joe Biden presidency and risk further dividing the electorate.

The answer is likely to come into focus once the chairs of the various investigative committees receive direction from Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Biden, if he wins.

But some key Democrats and House committees are already planning — and pressing party leaders — to keep digging into open investigations.

“There are legitimate questions that have to be answered about what took place, whether there is ongoing criminal activity,” said Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee. “That is fair game, no matter how you look at this.”

The Intelligence panel plans to pursue its investigation into the potential politicization of intelligence at the Department of Homeland Security, a probe Democrats say was obstructed by the Trump administration, according to a committee aide.

We are a nation of laws. If they break a law, they should be charged. There should be an entire investigation dedicated just to Hatch Act violations.

That yielding on enforcement of the rule of law in the interest of mutual toleration is a fool's errand, for the simple reason that the entire Republican Party apparatus is steadfastly devoted to toleration NOT being mutual.

And not only has the criming continued, it's gotten progressively worse.

We let Nixon off the hook for his (in hindsight) rather trivial crimes.
They crucified Carter, and we got Iran-Contra from Reagan.

We let Reagan off the hook for Iran-Contra.
They crucified Clinton, and we got a stolen election followed by fabricated intelligence to justify war with Iraq from Bush the Lesser.

We let Bush off the hook for all his shit.
They crucified Obama, and we got Lord of the Flies from Trump.

Bottom line, mutual toleration is dead.
Trump himself killed it with "Lock Her Up".

Rule of law is the ONLY safeguard we have left to preserve functional democracy.

we might not want to look like a Banana Republic and have the Congress go after the former president. However, if the agencies like the IRS have cause to prosecute the President, we should not stand in their way. And, of course, if he has broken state laws, they have the obligation to prosecute him as they would any other citizen.

One thing is certain, regardless of prosecutions or convictions, history will judge this president and his name will forever have and association with the likes of Benedict Arnold, or Quisling.

and focus on governmental reforms to prevent these problems in the future. Let's move the focus away from Trump, because he thrives on the attention. Plus, I think Dems should avoid doing anything that would look vindictive because that will backfire. They'll look like the Repubs bitching about Hillary's e-mails and chanting "lock her up" all the time.

I think investigations are fine if the intent isn't to hurt a political rival. If it is intended to inform how to fix government, then those sorts of investigations should happen. Dems need to make sure the public understands the intent of any investigations.

if we aren't going to punish that behavior. To take one example, remember the emergency he declared to fund his wall. He used a law passed during the Carter years that was intended to restrict Presidential power, not increase it. And it did decrease the power but it also codified enough power for him to do what he did. This is going to be a constant problem unless and until we have a discernable penalty for those who do the types of things that were done here.

Trump alone didn't stoke the flames. McConnell and Barr are every bit as bad, and they are just the start. We need to dissolve the hierarchies and echelons that have reached down to the lowest level of miscreants and thugs.

The Heroes Act can be dusted off and re-submitted to a Dem Senate (hopefully). Biden's agenda is pretty robust and can be done in the first term.

Keep investigations going, work on bringing America back.
