They had a lot of patriotic fanfare with Ray Charles doing that song live on the convention floor. Whoever planned that convention that year was a master at manipulating emotions. I never was a Republican, but when I saw that convention, I knew then that the race was over. Reagan was always going to beat Mondale, of course, but that convention with Ray Charles was a fucking barn-burner.

...is patriots who love their country. They are patriots who disagree with Democrats on various issues. But they are patriots who recognize Fascism when they see it, and they could see Trump and his cult coming a mile off. No Party name is worth the destruction of the United States as a republic.

Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace sat in the darkened convention hall after Trump’s catastrophic acceptance speech and talked for the MSNBC cameras about what they had just witnessed. You know what Steve talked about? The US Constitution. It was as heartfelt and heartbroken a soliloquy as I have ever heard.

When he says the goal of The Lincoln Project is to destroy the GOP as it is today because it has become rotten to its core — I believe him.

But speaking solely on my own behalf, I’ve been a Democrat my entire life: Senator Eugene McCarthy was the first presidential candidate I worked for.

One thing I’ve learned: purity tests and purges ensure Democratic losses. Democratic losses means Mitch McConnell remains the Senate Majority Leader and some right wing hack gets to be Speaker of the House. Democrats and other Left of Center voters who sit on their asses in midterm elections, either because they fail to see the importance or they are trying to send a message, ensure that a Democratic POTUS will be crippled.

My interest in purity tests is nil, at this point. If we don’t win elections, we will get nothing. If we don’t win this election and the next and the next, Fascism will continue to roll over us & you can bid a fond farewell to the republic.

Your characterization of my comment about John McCain is insulting, but I really don’t care.

And I never once said that the work of the Lincoln Project to help us win shouldn't be welcomed and praised. I'm only talking about after the election. If we win and you somehow think we should reward the Lincoln Project by moving to the center, or if you naively believe that the Never Trump Republicans are going to help us with a liberal agenda, well, I don't agree. Count me in for the purity test when it comes to national politics and the new President's agenda. (and no, that doesn't mean we need AOC to run in Omaha). We need a bold progressive agenda, not some third way triangulated bullshit agenda. If you think moderate republican-lite is the way forward to win elections, I think you need to leave the '90's and join us in the '20's. And while it was not my intention to insult you, much like you, I don't really care. As for me having been on DU before, well that's just crazy talk. Of course not.

agendas -- it's 2020. The Lincoln Project's members aren't elected officials, they work on campaigns. The 2016 platform was the most progressive in history, so's this year's. Kamala Harris has one of the most progressive voting records in the senate. Why would Biden chose her as his VP if he's not progressive? And finally, Republicans won't control the House as they did in the '90s.

Establishment
Centrist
Moderate
Third way
Neoliberal
Triangulation
Republican lite
Progressive Democrat (close enough to FDR Democrat)
Authoritarian

I need "status quo" "corporatist" or "incrementalism" to win at 2016 Clinton/Trump Election bingo.

Republicans (or whatever becomes of what we've long known as the GOP).

It's been fun. But I think we trust them beyond this point - AT OUR PERIL.

If they aren't or don't become full-on DEMOCRATS, my fear is that they'll go back to a lot of the ideas that make up the lifeblood of the GOP body politick. Cutting taxes for the rich, ignoring everybody else - AND what they need help with, going for the bucks regardless how it harms the ecosystem, shortens life on this planet, and shortens OUR life-expectancy. In other words - "starving the beast." That's how that hideous worshipper of the god of greed and selfishness, Grover Norquist, described it. Cut taxes so we can't pay for programs that help the poor, the sick, the homeless, the needy, the unemployed or underemployed, the general welfare. Oh, yeah. THAT old thing. "... to promote the general welfare ..."

https://www.acslaw.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/ACS_KeepFaith_Chap-4.pdf

Notice, it's "GENERAL welfare," too. NOT "to promote the affluent welfare" or "to promote our friends' and allies' welfare" or "to promote the privileged welfare" or "to promote the pre-selected/pre-determined recipients-whom-WE-find-worthy welfare" or "to promote the welfare exclusively of those who agree with us on the issues".

"... to promote the GENERAL welfare." That means the REST OF US WHO AREN'T YOU AND DON'T LOOK LIKE YOU OR BELIEVE AND WORSHIP YOUR WAY, Republicans.

who agree with us on a foundational level (democracy, voting, the rule of law, etc) while disagreeing on policy issues.

Throughout history people who have had ideological or policy differences - when faced with the threat of fascism or authoritarianism - have put their differences aside to fight for the greater good - and that's what TLP is about. They stated they would've even supported Sanders if he was our nominee, who has wide policy differences with TLP but who believes in democracy and the rule of law as they do, and they will continue to support Dems until Trumpism and the GOP who enabled him is destroyed.
