So what happened to this country?

I had to skip the entire night last night as soon as I saw how bad things were in Florida.

I started having severe panic attacks all night because it seemed likely Trump was going to win again. He still might which is making me really depressed. And the fact that almost all Republican Senators kept their seat is just insane.

I don't understand what happened. How were polls so astronomically wrong? How did Republican do so well after the catastrophe of the last 4 years?

I just hate this country and half the people in it. I still don't want to live here because it seems like it can never be fixed now that we don't have the Senate.

For 30 years now, Democrats have been ignoring the effects of the virtual stranglehold the GOP has on AM talk radio. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they push a relentless hate-fest aimed at liberals and liberal causes. When I think of all the billions of dollars Democrats have put into traditional campaign ads, GOTV, etc. over the years I wish to God that they would take a fraction of that and start building something like Air America 2.0 and at least try it out in some of the less expensive radio markets in the country. Otherwise, we're just ceding the airwaves to the GOP.

But if America eventually falls to authoritarianism, will democracy be strong enough in other currently democratic countries to survive?

I'm a member of the LGBT community so I do feel my survival being threatened with the rise of authoritarianism since we tend not to be popular with them.

with some of the most despicable people to ever inhabit the planet. That's what's wrong. Their fundamental value is hatred--hatred of people of color, hatred of liberals, and hatred of America. They purposefully chose for president a man who has worked to undermine US geopoltical and economic interests in order to placate Russia. Trump supporters are trash who want a trash government. Many of them are also physically ugly; I mean really ugly. I wonder if that may play a role in their desire to exact revenge on America.

1980 - Reagan wins and the precedent for a clueless buffoon, serving as the figurehead of the state is established.
Greed and giving tax breaks to the rich becomes acceptable. The presidency is shown to be the ultimate performance theater position, and by the end, when Reagan was in Alzheimer's already and barely holding onto cognition, they realized something else for the future:

2000 - George W. Bush shows that with enough powerful backing and money, the actor assuming the role of "president" does not have to be particularly aware of, or any good at the job, just controlled from behind the scenes...the presidency assumes a role of ceremonial control and the norms of the position are already primed to be stripped away...EXCEPT:

2009-2017 - Barack Obama saves the union from the economic and military ruin of the Bush years, stopping the plunge, but ultimately unmasking the racism inherent in the system and still vibrant in many parts of the nation...and the republicans also experimented with Sarah Palin as a method of controlling the mob's mentality. The qualities needed to be a viable presidential candidate from the GOP drop to barely able to fog a mirror and a willingness to say stupid, conspiratorial nonsense without regret or apology...

2016-2017 - Stage was primed for Trump and Trumpism - which is a natural slide into the much from Reagan to Bush II to Palin to Trump...

28. That's a good synopsis
Wed Nov 4, 2020, 04:26 PM
Nov 2020

However, I think we are now exhibiting something that was always there but we managed to cover up in previous decades.

Looking at the U.S. through its formation to the 20th century, there was no concern for the weak, for the downtrodden. We used racism and genocide to carve out the country and build wealth. Our avarice and selfishness was apparent to Alexis de Tocqueville when he toured the nation in the first third of the 19th century.

We might have ended chattel slavery but we were still eaten up with bigotry. Exploitation was of no concern until the Progressive Era at the close of the 19th century. Even then, reform was hard fought and piecemeal.

Into the 20th century, lynching was still rampant. The Ku Klux Klan enjoyed a national resurgence. Jim Crow ruled in law down south and only in practice further north.

It took the drastic conditions of the Great Depression to create more reform for our most vulnerable and even then, those had to be withheld from African Americans in order earn votes from Southern lawmakers. Those social safety net advances were popular among most working class white Americans until conservative opponents managed to tie the idea of "welfare" and other type programs with people of color in most Americans' minds.

This nation has always been greedy, cruel, selfish and racist. We just had the advantage of good public relations. Now that international observers can see us more readily, can compare us with other democratic nations, they are starting to see through the fancy facade.

It's still the same litter box; they can just see the nasty bits now.

25 years of right wing media has poisoned the public discourse.

But I think it is worse than that. Social media has found a way to inject that message straight into the brain stem. It bypasses many of the filters that previously helped mitigate the problem and goes straight to every viewer as a customized stream of propaganda. And because it is so customized by the algorithms, we don't even know what people are seeing.

The American oligarchs.

Again.

They get rid of erratic loose cannon embarrassment Donald Trump, but keep their boot lickers in the Senate in control.

So they get the stability of a Biden Administration, and the power to block any big picture reforms with their GOP Senate, and keep their court packing (or blocking) structure in place

No tax hikes, no big health care bills, no minimum wage increase, no social reforms, no climate change reforms.

Money uber alles!

Wed Nov 4, 2020, 04:09 PM
Nov 2020

in my lifetime. During the 60's it seemed like everyone was against the war (or at least everyone I knew) but in reality we were a small minority. Even after the Nixon debacle the result was Jimmy Carter, who was a good man but definitely not a progressive. Then the real loony tunes came into play - we elect a "B" grade actor (Raygun) and a Bush. Then Clinton who I would call Republican Lite (never met a GOP proposal he didn't like) - then another Bush (even worse). Obama was definitely a moderate although I think the greatest President in my lifetime.

Then this year we get to chose between two old men - Biden a good man, Trump a goof ball reality show host - both out of touch with our society.

What happened to this country - not much, it is not much different at a national level than it was when I was young. That is not to say that we have not made progress but I fear we have gone so far right that I'm not sure we have the time to fix our self-inflicted problems.

We are leaving our children a big mess and probably because of religion and racism which seems to dominate people's opinions more than anything.

We've made progress in some areas, passed legislation that's supposed to guarantee more equal rights but, even so, the law still isn't applied equally.

There's an even wider gap between the monied and the hungry. Our infrastructure is in dire need of attention, education is woefully underfunded, healthcare is a crap shoot depending on where you live and your income.

The wealthy and large corporations aren't required to pay their fair share in taxes while mom and pop businesses struggle.
Nearly half the country doesn't understand how government works, doesn't want others to have the same rights they have and vote for a president who is just as ignorant as they are. He glorifies mob tactics and violence, is unable to stop lying and is doesn't bother to contain his loathing of anyone who didn't vote for him.

Back in the day when we had nuclear bomb drills and had to sit under our school desks, I never imagined we'd have a president that glorifies dictators, barely bothers to hide his corruption and is totally without a moral compass.

We give so much credence and respect to religion and ritual and we allow racism to exist. Period.

It is either societally unacceptable for hate to breathe in the public square or its not.
With Mr. "good people on both sides" on the scene, this is just more exposed than ever, but not necessarily different.

Religion is at the heart of providing cover to racist and hateful, greedy bastards - always has...always will.

All Trump did was let the monsters out of the closet and give them permission to do what they do. And now we're scared and don't know what to do.

White guys who were not morally repulsed by owning other people like so many horses and sheep. Of course they could make more money that way by not having to pay somebody a minimum wage or do the work themselves.

Since 2016 I've halfway expected the greedy Trumpers to try expanding modern slavery even beyond prison labor.
