Oakland County is a little more blue than it was 24 hours ago.
For years, Republicans controlled government operations in Oakland County, including the board of commissioners, county executive, and other top countywide elected offices.
Following Tuesday's election, it's even more clear that's no longer the case with county voters turning out in record-breaking numbers. 75.54% of the county's registered voters cast a ballot (781,844) while a total of 249,009 straight party ballots were cast for Democrats and 199,732 cast for Republicans.
The top of the ticket Democrat candidates, presidential nominee Joe Biden and U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, garnered a combined 860,336 votes countywide to Donald Trump and John James' 665,337 combined votes.
At the county government level, five of the county's top six elected offices will continue to be held, for at least the next four years, by Democrats, including County Executive Dave Coulter, the first Democrat to be elected to this office, Prosecutor Karen McDonald, Clerk and Register of Deeds Lisa Brown, Treasurer Robert Wittenberg, and Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash. Sheriff Michael Bouchard remains the lone Republican.
In these six races, Democrats secured 2.78 million votes to the GOP's 2.34 million votes.
In addition, the county board of commissioners were able to hold onto their Democratic majority and flip one seat in the board's 15th district. Longtime commissioner Adam Kochenderfer (R-Rochester Hills) lost a close race, by 104 votes, to Democrat Melanie Hartman.
