Biden's Popular Vote Lead Over Trump Eclipses Clinton's in 2016
Joe Biden has now eclipsed the popular vote margin Hillary Clinton had over President Donald Trump in the 2016 election, with thousands of votes still being counted in several battleground states.
As of Thursday morning, Biden who has already broken former President Barack Obama's popular vote record from 2008 by millions currently leads Trump by about 3.7 million votes, and holds more than 50% of the overall popular vote. Clinton ended up with 48% of the vote and about 2.5 million more votes than Trump, the eventual winner, four years ago. It is unlikely that Biden's margin over Trump will shrink enough to match Clinton's, but votes are still being counted in states such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
With a narrow but plausible path to victory for Trump, there remains the possibility that Biden could win the popular vote but lose the Electoral College, similar to what happened in 2016 with Trump and Clinton. That scenario still haunts Democrats and prompted some calls for Electoral College reform after the 2016 election.
The results also come amid record voter turnout this year overall, with preliminary estimates by the United States Elections Project showing that nearly 160 million eligible Americans have voted in the 2020 election. The previous record for total voters was about 139 million, set in 2016. The turnout rate of close to 67% hasn't been seen in 120 years, according to Michael McDonald, a political science professor at the University of Florida who runs the project.
