I have been thinking about this the last few days.
Part of the reason Republicans did better than expected is the issue of COVID.
Many people voted for the Democrats because of Trump's incompetence on this issue. But there is something else that needs to be considered and this helped the Republicans.
For the most part, the Republican Party & the Trump Campaign conducted the 2020 campaign as if COVID didn't exist.
They had GOTV efforts involving knocking on doors & personal voter contact. Voter registration drives and big rallies involving thousands of people assembling together into large crowds.
The Democrats on the other hand did not have voter registration drives to the same extent. They did have GOTV efforts but these were mostly virtual which some could argue are not as affective as personal contact.
The Democrats did have rallies but these involved people staying in their vehicles which is not as politically potent as people getting together in mass to cheer on a cause.
The Democrats acted more responsibly but this difference in approach might have helped the Republicans to a certain extent & this has been overlooked.

(24,560 posts)In June, I was out there and did not ring a single door bell, I left literature for the July primary runoff. I got creative and it was very successful.
We are printing out own stuff from home etc.
It was announced in Sept that we would not be getting any lit from TDP and everything was going to be virtual. With that, I went and had 20,000 postcards printed. Shortly after my postcards arrived, we got Biden/Harris door hangers from TDP. They were now doing no knock lit drop, they put a script in VAN too.
But jeeze, everything was so slow. The no knock lip drops go fast and you can get creative. I really don't like calling and texting. Addresses are the most reliable method of voter contact.

(21,859 posts)(potential voters that is), it is just that Biden's campaign is being safe ... just wait for the next couple of weeks now, we're going to see a surging of CV cases across everywhere that trump has been, when/where he's had his rallies. Outbreaks are already happening too from what I hear. I suspect that with over 9 million CV, that we're going to see a resurgence of this horrible virus, through mainly the disgusting efforts of trump and his narcissism/insane desire to get in front of his adoring crowds.

(3,261 posts)And many other people were - unions, students, the PA Democratic party. We did it safely - masks, health checks, safe driving protocols, social distancing, etc. On Monday, when I canvassed, my partner and I ran into two other GOTV groups canvassing the same neighborhoods. Voters were positively overwhelmed by the amount of people they heard from. I can't speak for other swing states, but we did it in PA.
