With Eviction Bans Set To Expire, Jared Kushner-Owned Company Moved To Evict Hundreds Of Out-Of-Work Tenants

As the end nears for state and federal eviction protections and moratoriums, an apartment management firm owned by the family real estate company of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and White House senior advisor, has moved to evict hundreds of tenants in Maryland with overdue rent, according to the Washington Post.

Westminster Management, a division of Kushner Companies, sent eviction notices to hundreds of tenants who have fallen behind on their rent, many after becoming unemployed due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Post.

Property managers and landlords then threaten tenants with legal fees and begin filing eviction proceedings in court.

Westminster manages over 15,000 apartments, according to its website, many of which are in Maryland where the state eviction moratorium, which began March 5 and was renewed October 29, prohibits the courts from moving forward with eviction cases, though motions can still be filed.

Aside from the uber capitalist immorality, this is a dumb business move.
Given the continued unemployment problems, existing tenants who will eventually catch up, seem a better investment than evicting people hoping to get new renters when the same UE issue limits the field of applicants.
Bird in the hand, so to speak.
