We can stop the misinformation and reduce the risk to our democracy with one simple step.
We complain to the FCC about FoxNews lies, misinformation and hate speech.
FCC Complaint:
You must fill out a form ( of course)
You must be very specific: The date, time, channel and exactly what was claimed that is false.
This link is a good, basic guide to get started.

It's our airwaves; meaning the wavelength frequencies that TV, radio & internet use. We 'lease' every frequency to media.
We can prevent bad ones from getting a lease and prevent them from sending anything using frequencies; TV, Cable, Radio, Microwave, Laser, etc.
We can stop misinformation from the general methods used to promote propaganda and lies.
I know it's a hard path to follow, and follow through on...but it is one that will actually work.

I am not sure if 'paid subscription entertainment services' which is the legal definition of cable TV,could qualify, but worth doing a little research on for sure.

(17,857 posts)I am not going to listen to Fox News, but I could potentially read a transcript.
Can you computer generate a transcript from a broadcast and make it available on the web or is it copyright infringement? Is there software that can be loaded onto your computer to transcribe a broadcast?

(93,834 posts)1. The First Amendments PROHIBITS any legislation restricting free speech.
2. The workaround has been that the Government provides access to over the air broadcast frequencies, and thus can impose regulations on BROADCAST TV and radio stations. These are managed by the FCC
3. The FCC has NO jurisdiction over cable or online channels.

(639 posts)The FCC rules are not specific to just the delivery method, but also cover content that is deemed dangerous.
We can't outlaw speech, and I certainly do not advocate anything that would restrict even the most bizarre claims. That makes America fun and interesting sometimes.
But we certainly have made sure "FIRE" is not yelled in a theater. We could add 'home' in front of the word 'theater' and expand the list of 'fire' words.
We have TV ratings, which could be expanded to regulate unsubstatiated content. Maybe just a little icon, like TV-14, that states VALID or OPINION for validated news, like newsprint is required and opinion which would alert viewers to content that could be fake and content that is real.
We can regulate anything, in any way, we decide. It's our choice, not the courts. The courts do not screw with leglisation very often.
We can be careful how we word a new regulation.
I agree with your position as the very important starting points in a debate.

(93,834 posts)Cable programming is sent through PRIVATELY owned cable (or fiber optic) systems. The Federal Government has NO jurisdiction over their programming.
As for TV ratings, do you SERIOUSLY want a Government official imposing this evaluation?
