I know we lost, and the governor and state legislature are scumbags who do everything they can to stop black people from voting. But they did do this one thing right. If every state had been counting the mail-in votes as the arrived we would have been spared the last 3 days.
I say this because I believe in giving credit when it is due, and because I seldom have a chance to brag about my home state.

(24,653 posts)The 300K "missing" ballots were from several states. Florida was just one of them. The FL ballots in question were processed in Miami-Dade and the Tampa area.
Supposedly, the ballots had entrance scans indicating they were at the mail facilities, but no exit scans. That would be an indication they were still on the premises. However, they did not turn up in the sweeps. The postal service says that is because they expedited ballot delivery and sent them on to the SOE sites directly rather than through the process that would have provided for the exit scan. They say they were delivered.

(8,228 posts)I live in the bluest county in the state. Our election supervisor is a Democrat. I feel like our ballots in my county are safe.
In It to Win It
(8,228 posts)It depends on the county youre in but every county is allowed to start counting their early mail in votes as they come in. Im in Broward. Broward starts counting mail in ballots as soon as they receive them.
The biggest advantage that gives, even bigger than having a election result on Election Day, is it allows people ample time to know the status of their ballots and cure them if its rejected for whatever reason. That is more valuable than anything.

(10,132 posts)In my CA county they do signature verification as the ballots come in, and mark them as "counted", but they don't actually start opening the envelopes until the morning of election day. Yes, it gives people time to fix any problems with their ballots, which is a Good Thing.

(8,228 posts)Theyve made their website much more user friendly than it used to be.
When people check, they can actually see if their vote has been received, verified, and counted (they use the word counted). They are processed and counted as received.
They also announced that they would count them beforehand... and I think Broward would still be counting if they waited until Election Day and polls closed. Turnout was extemely high.

(22,243 posts)Our ballot board began screening Oct 15. They had already received 40,000 ballots by then..that is just one county too.
We are still counting; not because anything will change but because the election can't be certified until everything is counted. However last I heard, Biden was ahead in this county.

(16,646 posts)I can't remember what the GOP got to agree to mail in voting, and early counting. But really, both sides of the aisle should want this because if avoid the "red/blue mirage" problem that PA is suffering right now. Democrats would be just as suspicious if they saw a 400,000 vote lead evaporate over a period of days as early voting type ballots were being counted.

And not for nothing the Supreme Court of Florida was the one ordering that all ballots be counted before they were shut down by the USSC. That part is not on Florida.

(14,853 posts)... after the polls closed (and as expected). I and others here obviously hoped the lead would hold up, but nope.
I still think it's wise to count them ASAP because what if there's a fire just before election day? I saw a Milwaukee election official being interviewed before election day, in a room full of uncounted ballots everywhere, and it caused me tremendous anxiety about a fire destroying them. It's not like they were placed in fire-proof boxes or something similar.

(34,055 posts)The day and time are generally dictated by state statute.
In PA, for example, the BOE can't even start processing the ballots to determine if they are eligible to be counted until the morning of election day.
