Even Dubya won the popular vote in 2004. The last president to have never won the popular vote was Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877.
Trump will NEVER have the benefit of a popular vote mandate, he only had a chance because of a biased election system that favors small states.

The way I remember it, Alabama back then voted for electors, not candidates.

Kinda like now, of course, but specific elector names, not the specific candidate.

Election in 1888, so 132 years ago.
