The republicans make it seem like the first map means that they are more popular, but the second map shows the truth.

especially shows huge land swathes of red, many of those areas are not densely populated.

I still prefer the proportional voting maps, where the state size is depicted in accordance with the voting population. But I can't seem to find a link to one yet.

We wouldn't even be having discussions like this if our all knowing "founding fathers" hadn't fucked us over with that albatross called the Electoral College which will forever doom us to having a right leaning government while the majority of people's views are much further left.
