I teach high school, and work around teen-age girls all day, and am wary of "jinxing it". But I just don't think anything is going to stop this train now...Joe Biden is the President Elect, and The Donald is a lame duck.
With that being said, I think this will be looked on as one of America's finest hours. We have shown how strong a Constitution can be, how the people can withstand an onslaught against it, and can change things in a functioning democracy. We have also, unfortunately, shown the world that no matter how good, decent, honorable, or smart our leader is, we're only 4 years away from putting an idiot in charge. That's going to take a while to overcome, but I'm sure our traditional allies are breathing a lot easier today.
This will be a proud day for our country. We have proven we could go to the brink, but still pull it back on the strength of our belief in our system. We didn't have to riot and remove him by force...we did it by the law.
But I never want to get that close to the edge again. Kudos to everyone here for helping to keep everyone else sane for the last 4 years.

(53,738 posts)a smarter wannabe dictator may have pulled it off.
Thank, God trump is an idiot, cunning and evil, but still and idiot.

(13,020 posts)Dangerous candidate to even qualify to be nominated. The candidate must release 10-15 years of tax returns, resign as heads of their companies & holdings to avoid exploitation of the office, must be well vetted& pass gov clearance, must not have ties to sources in adversary countries. The methods & institutions having to do with elections & critical services must be protected to preserve election integrity (aka USPS). Separation of powers must be stringently asserted so consolidation of power cannot happen, as in the case of Lowbarr & the DOJ. We are a democracy & proponent of democracy the world over. We need to set a high standard.

(13,020 posts)POTUS, if Kamala runs the crooks will bring on the shenanigans again i'm sure, esp'ly that she's a woman of color.
Dems need to be vigilant and do what the party/Biden administration can to ensure the USPS NEVER gets sabotaged again. That and the rampant & blatant voter suppression.
Makes me worry just thinking about it but for now i'll just celebrate our ticket's win!

(9,524 posts)to preserve election integrity (aka USPS). This started when Bush stole 2000 and the SCOTUS appointees started undermining elections in a variety of ways. We need the voting rights act back, no paperless voting machines, rigid audits, you guys all know what we need. I think the Dems (hopefully) have finally woken up to how insecure our election infrastructure is and that it's pointless to talk about messaging and where we went wrong if we dont fix all that!

Justin Trudeau was the first one to reach out and congratulate Biden. And Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, just simply tweeted out, welcome back America

Putin would not have made so many missteps.
It should also be kept in mind, this didn't happen in a vacuum.
There were, and remain, malevolent forces continuing to divide us.

(43,036 posts)I'm not thinking of Nixon. I would venture to say the Trump administration was most like the period of the Teapot Dome scandal. Both were really about getting their hands on public resources. We lost federal lands, environmental regulation, tolerance. The 1920s were the post-War time of the Red Scare that feared immigrants. It was also Prohibition, bootleggers, pro-business, stock market bubble, and later in the decade Bund rallies. All of which sort of echoes - sound familiar?
