I was pumping gas at our neighborhood gas station. There was an unmasked man talking to an unmasked women about getting out of the house hoping that they soon could get the kids out of the house. Then their voices dropped and the woman said "You know this virus is going to suddenly disappear without our doing anything just like Trump said." The man replied Yeah, you know it. It's a shame that so many people believe this crap that they are selling us." She: "Don't worry, it will all be over after Jan. 20th."
As someone who has lost 5 family members to COVID including my husband, the love of my life after 50 years of a wonderful marriage, I started to say something to them. Then I thought, Why? Biden is President, the virus is raging, nothing I can say will change either. Watched them get into their respective autos and drive off. left me standing there with tears for the over 240K gone and their families that are left here to deal with the Trumpers walking among us.

(11,728 posts)Something absolutely has to be done about right wing media. It has turned almost half the country into blithering idiots who live in an alternate, insane reality. The mental defect that has to go into a thought process where millions of people are infected, over a quarter of a million have died, hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who did not die, will live with the debilitating effects of the virus, and all of that happened because of some political gain for Democrats? To sully the otherwise wonderful legacy of Donald Trump? I mean, we worry about the mental health of people wandering around town muttering this type of conspiracy theory to themselves, but we have a ton of people who are supposedly "normal" who are saying this crap out loud!

Biden, "I will spare no effort, none, or any commitment, to turn around this pandemic."
Biden Announces 12-Member Task Force for Coronavirus Response
President-elect Joe Biden said he would appoint a 12-member coronavirus task force on Monday, his first step toward fulfilling one of his biggest campaign promises -- to mount an effective response to the pandemic that has infected millions and damaged the U.S. economy.
I will spare no effort, none, or any commitment, to turn around this pandemic, Biden said Saturday, as he delivered his victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware. The panel will convert his coronavirus-fighting plan into an action blueprint that will be built on a bedrock of science, he added.
The task force will be co-chaired by former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Kessler and Marcella Nunez-Smith, a professor of public health at Yale University, according to a person familiar with his plans. It will also include Ezekiel Emanuel, a former Obama administration health adviser.
The co-chairs of the task force are scheduled to brief Biden on Monday after the members are announced.

My younger son, just turned 28, has 2 room/apartment mates, both of whom have tested +. One of the young men thought the virus was all a hoax. Interesting, in view of his job - he sells medical devices and actually masks and gowns up to go into ORs as part of his work. He is no longer a doubter.

(5,268 posts)because these people are in the Fox rightwing bubble just like the teapartiers that blamed Obama for the market slump and deficits and job losses he inherited. If Trump and McConnell and Repubs decide to hurt Biden and make him a one term Pres. instead of helping American people with another stimulus, our economy and unemployment will be worse by end of January and they will blame Biden and put Covid mess in his lap just as they blamed Obama in order to win back the Congress.

(1,910 posts)Even with the Biden task force and plan, the future is likely one of 2 Americas. Blue areas and individuals where we get the virus under control and eventually with testing and vaccines, go on with life quite normally by summer 2021. And Trump areas where people continue to suffer for years and years as they refuse testing, tracing, and even vaccines. Its easy to see how in 2022 a state like NY is operating normally while a state like N. Dakota continues to be hammered by the virus. They just show no signs of learning a thing from their mistakes. The virus will just continue to circulate for years through their communities.

(12 posts)I had a similar situation recently. I was talking to a gentleman regarding doing some work at my home and the coronavirus topic came up and the first thing out of his mouth was that it would soon be gone after this years election. I live in a heavily-Republican area so it came as no surprise that he said that. I was tempted to get into as discussion about it, but knew it would be a futile attempt. In addition, a few weeks ago I was at a doctor's office and while awaiting the doctor, I was chatting with his nurse about mask wearing and sure enough, her sentiment was similar to the gentleman at my home. However, I am slated to return to that office in a few days and am hoping she is my nurse because I'll play the devil's advocate and ask her how the coronavirus pandemic is going. I'll be curious what she says. Sadly, this woman works in the healthcare industry which is a bit scary.

(3,321 posts)I have come to understand that I do not live in the same existence, universe, whatever you want to call it, as they do. It is quite unnerving. Sometimes I feel like I am in an episode of the Twilight Zone. One of these coworkers lost a friend early on to Covid-19 - his friend is dead and he admits that, and he admits it was from this virus. He does not like to wear a mask and thinks it is all a hoax. How can that be? How can you admit that you lost a friend to this virus and at the same time refuse to wear a mask and believe it is all a hoax?
These are things I have never encountered before. I have no solution, not even a guess.
