It looks like we will lose 5-7 house seats but still retain the house.

It is 218 seats to have control. Right now Democrats have 216 seats that have been called and there are 23 seats still not called. We would need only 2 of the 23 to retain control and are currently leading in more than twelve of them so Democrats not carrying the house is virtually impossible. It really is just a question of how much of a margin we will have but calling all of the 23 remaining seats will take some time (likely a week maybe more).

there must have been dozens of stories at the time it happened.

There should be a consortium that has a visual board that shows who (federal, state local) was declared a winner, what races are still undecided, etc, with every major legit player involved.

And we need to make sure Democrats don't lose momentum between now and the midterms. Don't want a rerun of 2010. Hopefully, we can learn from our mistakes.
