6. Funny and true story. I used to work for a famous scientist named Michael Smith, who won the 1993

...who won the 1993 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. When Sweden announced that Michael Smith had won the 1993 Nobel Prize a reporter attempted to look up Michael Smith in the phone book. He ended up phoning a PAINTER named Michael Smith at 6am to ask him how he felt about winning the Nobel Prize. He answered "there IS some Chemistry involved in paint mixing, but this is ridiculous..."

8. Funny, and bizarre coincidence -a college classmate of mine, Russell Hulse, was the 1993 winner..

....of the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the first binary pulsar.

In our Freshman year we were in the same class of 25. We all split up into our various disciplines in our Sophomore year - he Physics and Mechanical Engineering for me.

Surprisingly, he had more personality than one would think of a Nobel Prize winning "nerd"!

Yeah, Michael Smith was an incredible guy, who also had a sense of humor. My experience as a scientist is that there are two types of outstanding scientists. There are the outstanding "straight down the middle" scientists who were star students in school, class valedictorians, won scholarships, went to the top notch universities etc. Those are the ones who end up being the heads of university departments, and heads of research institutions, and advisors to the government etc. But those are NEVER the ones who win Nobel Prizes.

Nobel Prize winners are usually misfits, and freaks, and geeks who took an unusual, path less traveled to success.

Michael Smith went to a second rate university and got a second rate degree. But he had an incredible mind! Also a wicked sense of humor. And he was a great, all round person. A GREAT role model for scientists.

13. We had an entering class of 125 divided into 5 of 25 each. There were 5 disciplines:

Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, and Electrical Engineering along with Physics. We were all mixed during the Freshman year and then were divided by discipline (25 each, or less depending upon dropouts) for the Sophomore year through graduation.

My graduation my class was whittled down to just 87.

It was a small private school fully endowed, meaning tuition for all students was $0! Admission was highly competitive.
