After the presidential race was called for Democratic candidate Joe Biden, Republicans’ trust in the election system plummeted, while Democrats’ trust soared, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.

Multiple new organizations announced Biden as the election winner on Saturday after four days of counting in several swing states. Following the news, 70 percent of Republicans now say they don’t believe the 2020 election was free and fair, a stark rise from the 35 percent of GOP voters who held similar beliefs before the election. Meanwhile, trust in the election system grew for Democrats, many who took to the streets to celebrate Biden’s victory on Saturday. Ninety percent of Democrats now say the election was free and fair, up from 52 percent before Nov. 3 who thought it would be.

Among Republicans who believed that the election wasn’t free and fair, 78 percent believed that mail-in voting led to widespread voter fraud and 72 percent believed that ballots were tampered with — both claims that have made a constant appearance on the president’s Twitter thread. Like President Donald Trump, a majority of the people that thought the election was unfair, 84 percent, said it benefited Biden.

Listen, I have my doubts about free and fair elections too. I do not think that it happens at the counting stage though. Republicans love them some elections fraud. They love dirty tricks and procedure that restricts the vote. They have been caught at exponentially higher rates that Democrats have historically.

Republicans without their media and their dirty tricks would be a regional party at best. Their policies really only benefit the wealthy in any consistent way, and there are not enough wealthy people to keep them in office. So, they cheat and suppress the vote. That is just fact. They blame Democrats for voter fraud all the time and it is just to try and delegitimize our victories.

This could not happen without the vast network of propaganda and lying that is Fox, the thousands of right wing stations, and the right wing internet presence.

Though they're right, elections aren't free and fair... Ask those former felons in Florida who were made to jump through hoops.

Lines. Tossed ballots for supposed "mismatch" of signatures. Discounted provisional ballots. They prevented many from casting a vote and did not count a higher proportion of votes from democratic strongholds.

I don't know that we've ever seen a truly free and fair election, where every citizen can easily register and cast their ballot and be confident that their vote is counted accurately.

Universal mail in like WA, OR, and CO could be a step in the right direction.

The systems are very secure with ballot tracing, plenty of drop boxes, validation of registration though ERIC, and many, many, other safeguards. As a relatively new resident of WA, I can say this is the first state I've lived in that made it truly simple to register and vote and have verification and confidence that your vote is received and counted. (As far as registration, the number of statutory voter registration opportunities is almost annoying -- but I am grateful.)
