Ohioans deserve a director of health with actual public health experience. State law requires the post be filled by a physician or an individual who has had significant experience in the public health profession. There is no evidence Gov. Mike DeWines pick, Stephanie McCloud, Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation administrator, fulfills this requirement (Amid coronavirus outbreak, Gov. Mike DeWine announces restructuring and new leaders at Ohio Department of Health, cleveland.com, Nov. 5).
Public health is a sprawling discipline that touches many facets of our lives. In the midst of a pandemic that has cost the lives of more than 5,000 Ohioans, now is not the time for on-the-job training. A director with a commanding grasp of public health on day one is critical.
Unfortunately, Ohio officials havent created a healthy or safe environment for strong public health talent to rise to the post. Dr. Amy Acton was bullied out of office, and what we lost shows in the exploding case counts weve seen since. Public health is often a thankless calling to begin with, and when faced with the prospect of armed protesters showing up at their homes, a hostile state legislature, and a governor who fails to stand up for science, its no surprise that finding a qualified pick has been next to impossible.

(17,972 posts)Then he began to give in to Trump demands to open up. Now Ohio is in a world of hurt again.
We also have too many ignorant Trumpsters in the state. I tried going back to Church. The Pastor asked people to wear masks yet here came a few, defiant, as if how dare you question me, so I stay home.

(14,847 posts)I would've likely never voted for him anyway, but he left her dangling when the Trump kooks showed up at her house.
Then the next candidate wisely dropped the idea of replacing her before even starting.

(1,642 posts)I live in a deep red county in NE Ohio. I saw single wide trailer homes with Trump signs plastered everywhere. I saw rundown homes in the county seat with Trump signs plastered everywhere. My favorite was Trump 2020 No More Bullsit.
Yeesh, human beings.

(17,972 posts)Of the country, traveled down to Lebanon, saw the same thing you did, tiny old homes with big Trump signs..same thing here. But funny thing the big houses and if you remember the Saint John bus company the last living brother had Biden/ Harris signs plastered all over his manicured lawn.
He used to drive our bus to the Casinos. I had a Trump sign next door, Biden/ Harris on the other. The Trump sign is gone, the Biden still up.

(14,847 posts)That's my all-paternal ancestry -- i.e., my father's father's father's... father's genes.
National Geographic conducted a study a few years ago to attempt to identify the Y-DNA of ancient Phoenicians by sampling Lebanese men and the men who live near their known ancient Mediterranean ports and city-states. My Y-DNA was an exact match to their statistical "best fit".
My Y-Tree seems to come from there (after Africa, the origin of humanity), then Sardinia and later the British Isles.
Sorry for those details, but I don't see Lebanon mentioned very much.

(31,660 posts)DeWine caved to the Ohio crazies by not standing up for Dr. Acton, who was doing a superb job.
Our state is falling further and further down the rabbit hole of Trumpism.

(33,915 posts)I'm not sure what more he was supposed to do that repeatedly blast people attacking her, and providing her with state protection.
I don't blame her for leaving - and I agree as to the state climate. But I don't think it is a fair reading of the situation to say DeWine did not stand up for Dr. Acton.
True Blue American
(17,972 posts)DeWine said they should attack him, he was the elected official, they should leave her alone.

There is a lot of smoke around Gym Jordan primarying either DeWine or Portman, so they will both probably stay as trumpy as possible.

Devout Catholic, 8 kids. He should love Biden.
Sherrod backed him at first, then said the same things we are saying. I would like to see Sherrod take him down again but I want him in the Senate.

(33,915 posts)And that no one in their right mind would want that job.
But I don't believe her loss is resonsible for the exploding case counts. They are more likely caused because the climate in Ohio that led to her being bullied out of office is the same climate that leads to non-compliance with masks. In other words both the loss of Dr. Acton and the exploding case counts are the result of a population that voted for Trump, rather than Biden.

(17,972 posts)Fools in Ohio caused this. Try Middletown and Hamilton County, home of Hillbilly Elegy. It is really bad there.
Ms. Toad
(33,915 posts)But you expect bad in the populated areas where even the elightened are exposed to enough people to encounter fools. But the rural areas (with far fewer daily contacts with others) are also in really bad shape.

(1,642 posts)It applies in Ohio and likely most states with fairly large urban centers. I think Lucas, Cuyahoga, Franklin and Hamilton went Biden. The rest?
Fucking depressing.
