North Dakota is a preview of the health System overwhelmed. With Italy, In hospitals that did not turn people away. patients were left to die of suffocation on trolleys. North Dakota has the highest rate of known Covid infections in the world.
How North Dakota became a covid-19 nightmare
.....
The virus is everywhere, affecting every profession and demographic. We see high case counts among health-care workers, in congregate living facilities and among hospitality workers but the outbreak isnt limited to these occupations. Entire offices that do not have prevention protocols in place are being wiped out by the virus.
Contact tracers have become overwhelmed. The North Dakota Department of Health recently announced the discontinuation of contact tracing, asking people who test positive to reach out to their own close contacts to notify them to quarantine. This change has likely added to covid-19s spread across the state.
Deaths have more than doubled in the past month, and hospitals are at capacity. Rural hospitals are especially challenged. Typically, their critically ill patients are transferred to larger cities in North Dakota, which have better-resourced care facilities. But as even our larger hospitals are swamped, patients from rural areas have been sent out of state for care. Families are left behind, wondering if their loved ones will recover and return home or remain hospitalized out of state and die alone.
Health-care workers are being pushed to the brink caring for patients with no relief. Jeffrey Sather, medical director for Trinity Healths Emergency Trauma Center in Minot, N.D., said recently that when he asks his colleagues how theyre holding up, they reveal a dreadful truth: I have to watch someone suffocate to death, every day, and sometimes several times a day.
... Astonishingly, there are still no statewide mitigation measures being enforced in North Dakota, leaving the task of stopping covids spread to local leaders. After a grueling six-hour meeting last week, the Bismarck City Commission voted 3 to 2 to approve a pandemic mitigation strategy requiring masks in public places and limiting social gatherings. The catch: There is no penalty for non-compliance. So while this is a step in the right direction, it wont be enough to curb the contagion.

The GOP / Trump have murdered more than 100,000 Americans.

(4,890 posts)They need to make the tRump humpers do this: I have to watch someone suffocate to death, every day, and sometimes several times a day. I'm not hopeful, but perhaps this exercise would break through a few minds poisoned by tRump and RW media.
We just crossed 240K dead, and its not a stretch to say we're likely to see another 10,000 dying from Covid in the next 2 weeks.

(8,200 posts)The majority of their constituency are ignorant racists who are so damn stupid they can not even comprehend that they are nothing more than ridiculous brainless nincompoops. The fact of the matter is we have 70 million dedicated racists. Sad state of affairs and not likely to get any better in the near future. The only hope is that when they die off their offspring will have better sense. That isn't very promising either given the state of civics teaching in the school systems. It is a fact that immigrants who have to study for their citizenship are far more knowledgeable than the vast majority of our citizens.

(42,663 posts)Edward William Brooke III (October 26, 1919 January 3, 2015) was an American Republican politician. In 1966, he became the first African American popularly elected to the United States Senate. He represented Massachusetts in the Senate from 1967 to 1979.
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Brooke graduated from the Boston University School of Law after serving in the United States Army during World War II. After serving as chairman of the Finance Commission of Boston, Brooke won election as Massachusetts Attorney General in 1962. In 1966, he defeated Democratic Governor Endicott Peabody in a landslide to win election to the Senate.
In the Senate, Brooke aligned with the liberal faction in the Republican party. He co-wrote the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which prohibits housing discrimination. Brooke became a prominent critic of President Richard Nixon and was the first Senate Republican to call for Nixon's resignation in light of the Watergate scandal.

(10,811 posts)There would be a public outcry for the heads of POTUS and the Generals in charge. Instead, we have a Covid Task Force doing nothing and Trump insisting the Virus War is a hoax. Remember early on Trump referred to himself as a wartime president.
Trump lost the war. Trump lost the presidency. Pence calling a Task Force meeting now would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.
The Administration is directly responsible for these deaths and the accompanying suffering. The Republicans howled over the four Americans lost in Benghazi, crucifying Hillary Clinton for the losses.
But 250,000 dead and 10 million infected? Crickets.

It's too bad we live in a society where the general philosophy is it's not a crisis until it's a crisis. One day a crisis you can't overcome is going to hit (such as global warming) and that's all she wrote about your species. That's how Nature's cruel calculus works now and forever.

Dead people are poor consumers.

(778 posts)On top of that, knowing that they had few beds or resources, some reservations tried to protect themselves and only allow trucks and necessary vehicles passing through the reservations. Of course, nasty noem took them to court to force them to open the reservation even during the rally. Don't forget the July 3rd Trump riot at Mount Rushmore. Recently there was a news story about people infected on a reservation who called over 20 different hospitals to ask if they could accept a few of their people and they all declined and said they were full with others. They ended up having to take them to Minnesota hospitals. So much for trying to protect yourself. Only feeling sad for the innocent victims who live in those States, believe in the Coronavirus, I'm didn't promote tRump.

(778 posts)Their Governor had a few speeches educating the nation on why she will not follow the "draconian" rules other Governors had put in place. Later she invited people to visit or to move there because their economy is great and she did the right thing. She is crazier than North Dakota's governor. Noem, along with my own Governor are seeing who can do the craziest things so they can be the candidate in 2024. (DeSantis)
Apparently Minnesota's Governor is getting tired of his residents running over to the Dakotas to do their partying and dragging covid back home with them. Yesterday he was chastising the governors of both States.

(1,910 posts)The one blessing is that almost all under 30s will not be in serious trouble from the virus. You are supposed to be stuck on stupid when you are younger. So we mostly have adults with 8 months of information who simply refuse to protect themselves and their families.

(786 posts)In New Jersey masks have been mandatory since March. We were on lock-down from March 21st through June 9th. When things seem to lighten up, folks got sloppy. Gov. Murphy recently reiterated that all must wear masks outdoors/everywhere. Since March, we cannot go into any business without a face mask; it's the law. When I leave the house I wash my hands, take my keys and place my mask on before I open the door. It doesn't come off until I get back home where I wash my hands again. I dare not touch my face with my bare fingers while I am out and about. I keep hand sanitizer, antiseptic wipes and a spare face mask in my car. Every time I go into a place of business, I use the sanitizer afterwards. We will be wearing masks for the foreseeable future. In New Jersey, our numbers are spiking up. At some point, we'll probably wind up on lock-down again.
You'd be surprised at how fear can help you get used to practically anything. Fear of dying alone without gaining consciousness; fear of a loved one contracting Covid-19 and dying; fear of open grave funerals.
"The virus decides."
The news is filled with happy talk about a new, highly viable vaccine. Folks must remember that developing a good vaccine and getting it to the people on the ground are two very different things. (For one, the vaccine must be stored at minus ninety degrees Fahrenheit. Two: It is dispensed in two doses.) People get sloppy from happy talk, when they need to remain surgically diligent for a virus with the "phenomenal capability and efficiency in spreading from person to person." We watch it happen in real time at the White House.
The folks in the middle west did not believe that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was going to be a problem for them; it was just an East coast/West coast thing. Scientists and medical professionals have said all along that it would eventually work its way across the country. There was real concern because rural America lacked the health infrastructure needed to manage the high case counts. Yet even in New York, refrigerator trucks (reefers) had to be brought in to handle the overflow of bodies that the funeral homes were too overwhelmed to handle; the body bags were stacked to the rafters. Crematoriums in New York and New Jersey had to request permission to run burners over the time limit. There were overhead drone videos of workers stacking up wooden caskets in mass graves for the unknown and/or pauper dead.
"We won't be able to move in front of this virus until we respect its power."
