Again. He was on CNN just now. Repeating himself that there will be no tie for Kamala Harris to break. Again used all the republicon talking points - "pack the courts" "SOCIALISM!!!!!!" "Green New Deal". . .
Says he'll be Moscow Mitch's backstop so nothing will get done. The thing that outraged me most, he actually used the phrase "fears of the people" as his excuse to stand in the way of progress.
No, you asshole, the fear of the people is that ONCE AGAIN the people have voted for Democrats, and we will be cheated out of the policies and actions that we want. By YOU joe Manchin.

(9,351 posts)He doesnt have to worry about re-election for another two years. What is his problem?
Roland99
(53,342 posts)perhaps if we can toss Rubio and take over Toomey's seat after he retires (and take at least 1 of the GA runoffs) then we can afford to lose Manchin
yardwork
(61,533 posts)And, frankly, we want him to be re-elected. He's bad but he counts as a Democrat and the count matters. If he weren't there, WV would elect a Republican, somebody like Ron Johnson.

(33,232 posts)This is just confirming that all our talk of Progress in the Senate prior to 11/3 was never going anywhere, regardless.
It's like people don't remember the year-long ACA battle and the eventual death of the Public Option. The fight wasn't with Republics, it was with OUR OWN "moderates": Baucus, Lieberman.

(17,862 posts)Look at his state. It is amazing he hasn't changed party yet. He has four years for WV to forget he ever was a Democrat.
This assumes Biden is even President. Ten state AGs have signed on to this crap.

(10,414 posts)even if both runoffs give us Democratic Senators, making it 50-50, he will NOT vote with Democrats, so there will be no tie for VP Harris to break.
Because of Joe Fucking Manchin, even if we win control of the SEnate, Moscow Mitch will still be able to stop everything. Even statehood for DC and PR.

Manchin's statements now are hurting our chances in the two GA runoffs. We cannot run on doing things that will drive votes, as Manchin is saying that at 50-50, he will put the kibosh on most of it.

(5,553 posts)Manchin doesn't represent DU, the United States as a whole, or anyone other than the people of West Virginia.
He walks the leftmost edge of what his voters will tolerate. The result is actions like this.
As I keep saying, when he does this we need to smile and nod, and let him do it. Push him too hard and he could give us the same treatment Sen Jeffords gave the pubs in 2001, or WV Governor Justice gave us in 2017.

(5,553 posts)To use a sports metaphor, we almost outkicked our coverage. We ran our most progressive platform ever and people were far less interested in voting for it than anyone expected.
It's not just 'why the heck would they vote for Trump?' that needs to be asked. It's also 'Why didn't more want to vote for us?'. Down ballot Republicans outperformed Trump almost across the board, suggesting Trump the person was less popular than the Republicans as a party.

(43,057 posts)not trust Manchin, Sinema, and possibly Hickenlooper to stand with most all the other Dems on huge votes such as court expansion, the Public Option, ending the filibuster, etc etc. On some votes (expansion especially, and the filibuster, probably the Public Option) I think even 53-47 would not have been enough.

PA Toomey - asshat deluxe, but the least worst of a shitbox lot
NC Burr (retiring in 2022) - probably the likely to take the deal I think, I might be wrong
NC Tillis (assuming he wins, which is likely, so pissed at Foxx and Stein for not running, Stein probably in 2020, Foxx in 2022 for the open seat from Burr's retirement)
KS Marshall (just won, an open seat too! in good part due to Sibelius refusing to run)
KS Moran
LA Kennedy
LA Cassidy
ME Collins (ugh, Susan Rice would have won IMHO, Gideon was a weak candidate)
KY Paul
KY Moscow (zero chance, he will be the 2nd most powerful person on the planet (or 3rd, after Xi) unless we sweep the 2 GA runoffs, the Rethug Senate is going to be a NIGHTMARE)

(528 posts)My understanding is Toomey isnt running again as well. Maybe Toomey or Burr could be enticed with the Small Business position? Or maybe Collins?
Probably not very likely for any of this, but might be worth a shot.

(43,057 posts)Burr is highly comprised and likely a felon (if there is any justice in the world) so maybe we get that seat anyway if things break the right way.

The video isn't up at this time, but that is the essence of what he pledged to do. The other replies here refer to what he said on Fox "news" yesterday. He went on CNN this morning and that's where I saw it.
Yes, I know we need him for the numeric count. But seems to me that pledging things like that should draw more outrage than something AOC says. Or Bernie Sanders. At least they support the Democratic party and oppose Moscow Mitch.

FoxNewsSucks
(10,414 posts)since the Senate may end up 50-50 instead of the 49-51 it would be if he flipped.
Otherwise, he's just one vote less. Which he often is anyway.

(53,010 posts)Even if we get to 50, he'll vote with the Republicans? That's assuming the OP interpreted him correctly.
FoxNewsSucks
(10,414 posts)From yesterday's Fox interview and CNN this morning, I assumed he'd still be caucusing with the Democrats which would give the 50-50 control. He just wouldn't be voting with the Dems on the things that make MAGAts pee themselves in fear.
So I think he will permit the majority, but obstruct it at times.
