Biden Announced His COVID-19 Advisory Board--and Experts Are So Relieved
President-elect Joe Biden announced his COVID-19 advisory board today—and public health experts across the country breathed a collective sigh of relief. Biden and vice president–elect Kamala Harris also revealed their administration's larger science-based plans for fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
Biden's COVID-19 advisory board will have three co-chairs: David Kessler, M.D., professor of pediatrics and epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF and former commissioner for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA); Vivek Murthy, M.D, former surgeon general for the U.S. and vice admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; and Marcella Nunez-Smith, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine, public health, and management at Yale University as well as the associate dean for health equity research at the Yale School of Medicine.

The other 10 members of the advisory board include well-known and respected experts in virology, emerging infectious diseases, emergency medicine, and health equity. That includes people like surgeon and writer Atul Gawande, M.D., MPH, and immunologist Rick Bright, Ph.D., who was the director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) until he blew the whistle on the Trump administration for ignoring his warnings about the coronavirus and was allegedly ousted in retaliation, CNN reported at the time.
“It's really such a relief to see such a strong team of science-driven scientists, clinicians, and policy experts on the Biden COVID-19 Task Force,” Angela Rasmussen, M.D., virologist at Columbia University School of Public Health, wrote on Twitter.
