Costco updated its face covering policy to require people with a medical exemption from wearing a mask to instead wear a face shield in the store.
The company will mandate all members, guests and employees to wear a face mask or face shield in the store starting on Nov. 16, except for children younger than 2 years old, according to a guidance updated on Tuesday.
"Members and guests must wear a face mask that covers their mouth and nose at all times," the guidance reads. "Individuals who are unable to wear a face mask due to a medical condition must wear a face shield."
"Entry to Costco will be granted only to those wearing a face mask or face shield," it added.

(3,383 posts)people with severe COPD requiring O2 should ESPECIALLY wear a mask. This is high liability to the store. If you can't wear mask, then you shouldn't be going out. Shopping at Costco is not a right.

The mask could well be a trigger.

(50,296 posts)that may not be the case, they could be on their own, financially vulnerable among other roadblocks to being able to stay home.
I do think shields are a reasonable alternative.

(3,383 posts)telling people to make dietary and lifestyle modifications. It's hard as nails but sometimes you have to do it. And there are a million reasons why it is not doable, but the body doesn't care. You need to find a way or there will be serious consequences. And in this case, the virus doesn't care about those very valid reasons.
I want to be sympathetic but sometimes, there are just no easy choices. And sometimes it is difficult and uncomfortable. But that is life and we dig in deep. When it is a matter of life and death, I think people need to rise up to the occasion. And maybe we need a social infrastructure to help these people out. But the mask mandate should not be compromised bc we don't have a social infrastructure in place to assist all of society. This is how the virus spreads.

(50,888 posts)A person covering their mouth and nose themselves should not suffer as great a trauma if any.

(50,296 posts)just having both their mouth and nose covered whether it is by a mask or hands could trigger a sense of suffocating resulting in a panic attack.

(50,296 posts)"One qualification that would probably be legitimate", I used the word "probably" which I would have thought made it clear I wasn't citing any specific exemptions allowed by States or Corporations.

(32,633 posts)She will not tolerate wearing a mask, she takes it off immediately. And of course she has no understanding why it's necessary. But she rarely goes out in public so there's little risk for her.

(617 posts)I haven't sought a medical exemption because I can wear one for a short time and if I get overwhelmed I can just leave wherever I am since I have no need to go anywhere that requires a mask except for brief shopping trips. But I have sensory issues and it feels awful to wear a mask. I feel like I am about to cry the entire time. I would not have been able to wear one at all as a child, as an adult I can manage long enough to run my errand and get out ASAP. Fortunately I am self employed and work at home so it hasn't been an issue there.

(3,383 posts)I wish I could work at home. But I can't. One of these days (in a couple years), I hope to be able to do the same as you.
But during a pandemic and with the risks, I would not be writing any mask exemptions or if I owned a store, not require masks. It is too much of a liability. I would be telling people to stay home, order curbside, or use those delivery services or something.

(8,036 posts)My husband works retail with the public, wearing a mask, gloves, and behind a plexiglass shield, and he's the one that has to tell idiots that they can't come in without a mask. They all say they have a "medical excuse". He says "if you have such a dangerous medical condition you shouldn't be here". But he doesn't get to ask to see a doctor's pass.
