...but, in Alabama, as in far too many other parts of the U.S., winning football championships for the state’s university or NFL team is enough to confer godlike status, even if one has shown no functional reasoning capacity away from the gridiron.

(And, lest I seem to be bashing red states, let me point out that, even here in deep-blue Washington, if Pete Carroll were to run for elective office, I’m sure he’d win in a landslide. Fortunately, Pete’s a good liberal.)
