Mainly so the replacement would have an opportunity to gain more support. Hopefully the governor will select a strong candidate that can win statewide.

...if the Governor appoints someone, as we have a very talented pool of Democrats to choose from.
LA Times had an editorial this morning that strongly urged Gov Newsom to appoint someone from Southern California for a change. For several decades now the political weight has been North, specifically the Bay Area, and SoCal is a very different region. I thought that sounded like a good idea.
LA and San Francisco are totally different.
