I swear to God people are losing all semblance of reason.
I was out raking leaves just now, minding my own business. A near neighbor, who I've known for over 20 years, walked up to chat (as she has done many times before). I said the typical "Hi, how you doing?" and I guess that was all she needed. She absolutely launched. It was MY fault Biden was elected. It's MY fault the country is ruined. Apparently having a Biden sign in my front yard was way more powerful than I ever imagined. And our state went for Trump, so it's obvious my vote didn't make a difference.
She grabbed the rake out of my hand and pushed me, screaming that I needed to move "somewhere else". Thankfully, my next door neighbor came out, yelling that he had called 911. You would have thought that would have slowed her down, but no. She continued to push me, swinging the rake and screaming that I had ruined her life and that I needed to leave. Another neighbor came out and ran over to try to wrestle the rake out of her hands. He got whacked in the head.
Fortunately, there's usually a patrol car sitting less than a mile away at our local park, so the response time was swift. They hopped out and ended up having to wrestle the rake out of her hands. All the while she is ranting and raving, spit flying (no mask, of course). They ended up cuffing her and putting her in the squad car, at which point she started banging her head against the glass. I felt like I was in a bad episode of Live PD or COPS. Neighbors up and down the street were outside watching the spectacle. The police had to hogtie her to keep her from injuring herself. All the while she was wailing that Trump was President and my "kind" needed to leave the country. My kind? I'm a 63 y/o white woman.
Both I and my neighbor are pressing charges. I'm sitting here in shock, trying to understand how someone I considered a nice neighbor could have lost all reason. I can only think that she is suffering from some mental disorder and has had a break of some kind.
Right after the election the SO and I had a talk about moving to a "blue" state, given all the craziness going on. I didn't want to, but sadly, I am rethinking that decision.

You can also then look up all the information you need about any given area in the internet. You can look up demographics, racial breakdowns, climate, median salary, etc.
I moved to New Mexico and was house sitting for a friend and I did all this. By the time I got my condo in Santa Fe I knew tons of information about housing, general pricing, locations and demographics of each area. It led me to make a great decision on buying a condo in a great area.

(91 posts)For affordable living just 10 minutes from downtown Minneapolis to the west and 10 minutes from downtown St. Paul to the east, I recommend the tiny, postage-stamp-sized suburb of Lauderdale. It borders both cities where they meet on the north. It has the look and feel of a modest small town. It is also adjacent to the University of Minnesota agriculture campus, so there are student farm fields, golf course, etc. that give one the feel of the country, as well. Most of the homes (though not all) are modest and small, but it is very safe and has a fine school district. And they are very quick to plow the snow! It votes blue all the time. Where would you be moving from? I congratulate you for not making winter the highest priority. Living in a safe, liberal, well-educated area is the most wonderful feeling, and cold weather is a great bonding time. Good luck with your plans.

I agree with your assessment of how it affects republicans and Democrats in different ways. Also it would differ according to a person's knowledge of history and authoritarian regimes. I think those with a wider understanding of history are more inclined to be very fearful and traumatized by Trump and the republicans. What we are witnessing is really very similar to 1930s Germany.

QAnon is a far-right conspiracy theory alleging that a cabal of Satan-worshipping pedophiles is running a global child sex-trafficking ring and plotting against US President Donald Trump, who is fighting the cabal. QAnon also commonly asserts that Trump is planning a day of reckoning known as the "Storm", when thousands of members of the cabal will be arrested. No part of the conspiracy claim is based in fact. QAnon supporters have accused many liberal Hollywood actors, Democratic politicians, and high-ranking government officials of being members of the cabal.[9] They have also claimed that Trump feigned conspiracy with Russians to enlist Robert Mueller to join him in exposing the sex trafficking ring and preventing a coup d'état by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, Bill Gates, Dr. Fauci, and Hollywood A-listers. I recently learned that a Dr./Author who I really used to admire believes this too, Dr. Christine Northrup....

(16,843 posts)The woman did a terrible thing, but I don't think we should lock up an old person and throw away the key because she lost control of herself. At her age, there are many things that could be wrong with her, and the state of her health needs to be determined. And while she did an awful thing, she didn't maim or kill anyone.
Another thing that should be considered is her prior behaviour. If she's been a good neighbor for the past 20 years without any hint of violence toward anyone, she should be given the benefit of the doubt until they're sure what caused these attacks. You don't throw a so-far decent person away because of one incident unless the incident is heinous and/or was done out of spite rather than because of illness.
Finally, it's understandable that we're defensive in a situation like this because of all the hate in our politics these days, but it might not have been in her nature all these years to attack someone for having different political beliefs. It could very well be a combination of poisonous propaganda with mental illness that caused this incident. The woman is dangerous in her present state, no doubt, and everyone should make sure they aren't victimized by her again. But have some compassion for the woman if it turns out she deserves it. This is going to be a sad end for her as well, and it's even sadder if this situation occurred for reasons beyond her control.
wnylib
(21,420 posts)clearly what I was trying to say.
One thing that made me think that this could be an aberration caused by a disorder is the OP description of 20 years of normal interactions with the woman.
I'd be very shaken by such an attack and the neighbors are right to press charges. But the court should consider her past behavior and possible conditions before passing judgment. An old woman, living alone, being fed constant propaganda from her media sources and perhaps relatives, could snap if she also has some of the ailments that affect judgment in some seniors.

It's like the Shymalan movie 'The Happening' where people glaze over, and start malfunctioning.
Generally, people who reach the end of their ability to reason, begin lashing out. The Right has always had less reason than the Left (and great suspicion of anyone with an intellectual life). But Trump really freed up rank-and-file lunatics to shriek their half-developed thoughts.
I ended a relationship with a family member (who had been a journalist) after she continued supporting Trump following the Florida Gazette newsroom murders ...which happened because Trump pilloried the media. That was more than 2 years ago.

Those good old Republican values hard at work being passed down from generation to generation in their 'pull yourself up by the bootstraps' lie for others. They just can't accept that their policies and ideals are all failures.

(11,446 posts)But after having to move my mom a few years ago reading this story I think what she is really upset about is her son forcing her into assisted living. My mom was much older 90 when I moved her and had fallen and needed to move even so losing ones house is hard and my mom was so angry at us for moving her. Her doctor called me and told me she had to go, she had been fighting going for years. My mom is tough kept working till 80 the last few years was part time but she was determined.
So I think she used Trump as an excuse because she was upset about losing election. But the real anger is losing her husband and home and at her son. Easier to get mad at a neighbor than your son.

(16,843 posts)She lost her husband and now her son is running her out of her own house, so she lost it. Now that we have the bigger picture and we see what an asshole the son is, I think it's likely that he is a cause of all this. He probably told his mother that he can't take care of her anymore because the Democrats are ruining the economy, so she decided to take it all out on the most visible 'enemy' she could find. This is so sad.
Due to what the son said to the victim, I think all the victims should sue. Her life is probably ruined anyway, and it would hurt the son to have to pay for a lawyer and damages out of the estate, so I say fuck him. This shit is more his fault than anyone else's.

(22,920 posts)but my incident was after Obama was elected. I had an "Independents for Obama" (long story) sign in my yard and a neighbor who seemed normal and even likable became absolutely unhinged.
She was in my driveway, screaming at me. Fortunately there wasn't a pandemic then nor anything that was turned into a weapon. But she was screaming about the secret "muslin" and yada, yada. And how I'm everything that's wrong with the world.
I also learned she was a hardcore Limbaugh, Glenn Beck person and regularly talked about her guns. So, we decided to lie low since this is a very red area and more probably sympathize with her than me.
Flash forward about four years and I see her walking her dog, right where I had to stop at a stop sign. I decided to wave, hoping there had been some shift.
She motioned for me to roll down my window, which I did, and came over with a smile.
And proceeded to tell me she hates me and people like me more than ever and that the world is destroyed for her son because of me. And a few times after that on the website Nextdoor she said she hoped Al-Qaeda bombed my house.
Okie dokie then.

She was already exhibiting symptoms of being a danger to others, but repeatedly butting her head in the window glass of the squad car made her a danger to herself as well. She was/is unhinged, even if just temporarily. I hope you plan to have charges pressed against her for assault and a restraining order filed immediately to make it illegal for her to cross onto your property. And if she violates it, call the police again and they'll arrest her deranged ass. God knows, I would. This type of behavior signifies that she's fully capable of setting your house on fire. In the book Columbus and other Cannibals, indigenous author Jack D. Forbes lucidly explores a psychological disease that has been informing human self-destructive behavior that Native American people have known about for years. After reading his book, it was clear to me that he was describing the same psycho-spiritual disease of the soul that I wrote about in my book, The Madness of George W. Bush: A Reflection of our Collective Psychosis. I introduce the idea that from the dawn of human history our species has fallen prey to a collective psychosis which I call malignant egophrenia. Speaking about this very same psychic epidemic, Forbes writes, For several thousands of years human beings have suffered from a plague, a disease worse than leprosy, a sickness worse than malaria, a malady much more terrible than smallpox. Indigenous people have been tracking the same psychic[ii] virus that I call malignant egophrenia for many centuries and calling it wetiko, a Cree term which refers to a diabolically wicked person or spirit who terrorizes others. Professor Forbes, who was one of the founders of the Native American movement during the early sixties, says, Tragically, the history of the world for the past 2,000 years is, in great part, the story of the epidemiology of the wetiko disease.[iii] Wetiko/malignant egophrenia is a psychosis in the true sense of the word as being a sickness of the soul or spirit. Though calling it by different names, Forbes and I are both pointing at the same illness of the psyche, soul and spirit that has been at the root of humanitys inhumanity to itself.
Wetiko/malignant egophrenia is a disease of civilization, or lack thereof. To quote Forbes, To a considerable degree, the development of the wetiko disease corresponds to the rise of what Europeans choose to call civilization. This is no mere coincidence.[vi] The unsustainable nature of industrial civilization is based on, and increasingly requires violence to maintain itself. Genuine civilization, in essence, means not killing people. Referring to the lack of civility in modern society, Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western civilization and responded by saying, I think it would be a good idea. It makes sense that native people would know about malignant egophrenia, as they were both oppressed by, but werent, at least initially, under the curse of modern civilization. Being under the sway of modern civilization can feel like something foreign to our nature is being imposed upon us, as if we are living in an occupied land. Modern civilization suffers from the overly one-sided dominance of the rational, intellectual mind, a one-sidedness that seemingly dis-connects us from nature, from empathy, and from ourselves. Due to its disassociation from the whole, wetiko is a disturber of the peace of humanity and the natural world, a sickness which spawns aggression and is capable of inciting violence amongst living beings. The wetiko virus is the root cause of the inhumanity in human nature, or shall we say, our seemingly inhuman nature. This psychic virus, a bug in the system, in-forms and animates the madness of so-called civilization, which, in a self-perpetuating feedback loop feeds the madness within ourselves.
Wetiko/malignant egophrenia is a disease of civilization, or lack thereof. Forbes writes, The overriding characteristic of the wetiko is that he consumes other human beings, that is, he is a predator and a cannibal. This is the central essence of the disease.[ix] Predators, full-blown wetikos are not in touch with their own humanity, and therefore cant see the humanity in others. Instead, they relate to others either as potential prey or as a threat to their dominance. As if a different breed who is more animal-like predator than ordinary human being, someone fully taken over by the wetiko psychosis consumes others lives, physically, emotionally, psychically and meta-physically, beyond just the material body and physical possessions to the level of meaning itself. Wetikos are the anti-artists of our culture, embodying the opposite of what creative artists do. Unlike an artist (please see my article The Artist as Healer of the World), who creates life-enhancing meaning and enriches the world without robbing others, a wetiko takes and consumes without giving anything back, continually draining and impoverishing the planet of resources.

Psychotic people used to go on about aliens. Then terrorists became a real world concern and troubled people saw them everywhere. The fact that what he says doesn't make sense is no impediment for people who can't look reality squarely in the face and make peace with it.

You wrote about it so well I felt I was there.. glad you & neighbors are ok with the mad woman on the loose. Imagine losing it so bad you have to be hauled away by the police.

The cops might have been hasty. I wouldn't think it would take too long for the head-bashing she was doing to calm her down.

For future reference, mulching up the leaves in your yard has many benefits compared to raking the leaves. Mulched leaves are a natural fertilizer, helps suppress weeds and encourages an ecosystem of insects that help feed the wild birds in the next springtime.

It does make you wonder how many people out there that are on the edge and might go over it because of Trump's loss. There are a lot of crazy people out there that are either livid over Trump's loss or delusional when it comes to covid.

(1,040 posts)Reading all your kind words and advice helped so much in processing what happened. I am much calmer now, and able to think more clearly. Thank you again -- DU is just the greatest place.
I just got back from the DA's office. The ADA told me what happened after the police took my neighbor away, and we discussed how things would happen going forward.
The police initially took her to the hospital to get checked out (re: the head banging). She was released from the ER and taken to jail. The police DID go search her home, and according to the report, found 2 loaded handguns and an unloaded rifle, along with ammunition. I have to say I almost got sick when I heard that.
Based on her age and condition (and probably because of COVID), they moved pretty quickly, filing preliminary charges, including multiple assault charges as well as resisting arrest. They held an emergency hearing via video, at which time she was arraigned. According to the ADA the judge wasn't too keen on her staying in jail, so bond was set and she was eventually released in the custody of her son. The judge ordered that she not be returned to her home, and that the son make provisions for her care (to be approved by the judge at the next hearing). A complete mental health workup was also ordered, and the Court is contacting her current health care providers as well. The ADA said she was going to ask the Court to appoint an ad litem for her, in addition to any public defender or attorney her son hires to defend her. There were some other provisions but I can't remember them right now.
I am going through with pressing charges (as is my neighbor) if for no other reason than that this woman's plight comes to the attention of the authorities and she can get the help she needs. I don't know the chain of events that caused her to act the way she did, but the death of her husband (which was somewhat unexpected as he died during a routine surgery), losing her home and possible exposure to the far right's venom obviously unhinged her. I told the ADA that I did not think it would serve any useful purpose to ask for a jail sentence. She agreed, and shared with me that the woman has no prior criminal history, so she would probably get probation from the judge anyway. So, hopefully, the son will get his mother the evaluation and the help she needs. Better minds than mine can hopefully assess her situation (including any attempts by her son to take her home, control her assets, etc.) and make the best call for her. I told the ADA about my phone conversation with the son, and that it did appear that he was trying to "take control" of his mother's life. Now whether that's because she's been losing her grip on sanity and he's trying to protect her, or the fact that he's moving in has caused her to lose her grip on sanity, I have no idea. Like others have said, her going into an assisted living facility where she is around other vulnerable people, would not be an appropriate placement. That would open up any facility to a boatload of liability should she "go off" again.
Bottom line, she's "on the radar" now, so hopefully she will get the help she needs and won't be a danger to herself or others in the future.
The neighbor who called 911 got some homemade pumpkin bread and my everlasting thanks. He and another neighbor came over while I was gone and raked and bagged the leaves. Did I mention that, for the most part, I have wonderful neighbors?
So, all is well, and things are quiet on our little street now.
Thank you again, DUers ... you're the best!

(13,776 posts)Dang. How incredibly disconcerting that must be, for a formerly civil neighbor to PHYSICALLY ATTACK YOU. And then for all this legal stuff to happen as a result. Not to mention that there were loaded guns in the house of someone who thought it appropriate to attack you with a rake.
It is so incredibly sad to see what has happened to this country; maybe she has mental health issues that would have manifested in this way anyway, but maybe the constant anger from the right has sent her over the edge. I'm glad your other neighbors are good.

(2,541 posts)Thats terrible and very troubling to hear that she would cross that line at the age of 70 and after 20yrs of being neighbors. I am glad you are ok. I would also suggest a TRO unless that is automatic with pressing charges.
I dont think this is a mental disorder at all. If you have not taken sometime to listen to a Rush Limbaugh, Micheal Savage, Mark Levin, Tucker Carlson or Laura Ingraham (I know this is a tall order) I suggest you do so for as much time as you can stand. Certainly mental disorders are a reason for some these people but not all, no way. This pure unvarnished, primal hate. The talking heads mentioned above & trump are telling these people that the Dems, Biden, Pelosi, Schiff etc are going to destroy America, destroy Religion, destroy God, the Planet, the Universe right after taking all of your guns and forcing you to say happy holidays not Merry Christmas. This is not a mental disorder its hate and fear. These people think the world is about to end and its our fault.

(5,161 posts)that I have refused to speak with for 6 years after an incident. I am sorry this happened to you. My experience 6 years ago was almost identical to yours, but with no bodily contact. Wacko neighbors were belligerent idiots who mobbed me (I am a single household). It was an incident involving their use of my property without right or consent. It involved multiple occasions of them yelling about their justifications of the use, and escalated once to a call the wackos generated to a police officer who had to spend about 2 hours with them. I simply refused to engage, and maintained my request they remove their items from my property. Since then I just ignore the loud mouths. Not a wave, not a recognition look, I just continue to rake my leaves or continue on my path. I am sorry, I know this was a terrible feeling of personal violation. What idiots. They are everywhere. I am also rural in a red state. Take care.

https://www.localsyr.com/news/local-news/police-source-parts-of-e-genesee-street-in-dewitt-closed-due-to-barricaded-person/
UPDATE: On Saturday around 9:20 a.m., DeWitt Police officers were dispatched to 6840 E. Genesee St. for a menacing complaint.
It was reported that a male, who was later identified as Jonathan Almonte, 33, of DeWitt, had threatened a neighbor with a machete.
When officers arrived on the scene, Almonte barricaded himself in the upstairs portion of the apartment building, according to police. That is where Almonte and the victims apartments are both located.
The victim was able to safely get out of the building, according to police.
A crisis negotiator with the department communicated with Almonte for around three hours. During this time, Almonte had entered into the victims unoccupied apartment and an adjacent storage room and started throwing stuff out of a second story window.
He had also threatened to burn the building down, according to police.
Other than Almonte, everyone in the building and neighboring buildings were evacuated. A short time later, Almonte set a fire inside of the building and caused damage.
Around 12:15 p.m., Almonte left the apartment building holding a machete. Officers ordered for him to drop it numerous times but he allegedly refused and started to run at officers.
Officers then deployed tasers to try and stop Almonte, but that was unsuccessful.
A DeWitt officer discharged one round from their firearm, but they did not hit Almonte. Almonte then allegedly threw the machete in the direction of multiple officers, nearly hitting them. Officers were then able to take him into custody without further incident.
While investigating, it was found that there was possibly bomb making materials in the apartment building. The Onondaga County Sheriffs Office Bomb Unit responded and cleared the scene.
They did not find any bomb making materials in the apartment.
Almonte has been charged with the following:
Arson in the third degree
Burglary in the second degree
Criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree
Menacing in the second degree
Criminal mischief in the fourth degree
Attempted aggravated assault on a police officer
Resisting arrest
Harassment in the second degree
Almonte will be kept at the Onondaga County Justice Center while awaiting arraignment.
According to police, no one was injured during the incident.
The name of the officer who discharged their firearm will not be released for 72 hours, due to DeWitt Police Department policy.
On the Syracuse.com (pay to view) site, more information is included about the background of this guy:
https://www.syracuse.com/crime/2020/11/girlfriend-dewitt-man-in-standoff-across-from-wegmans-paranoid-and-spike-addict.html
His girlfriend, Carrie Midlar, said in a police statement that she believed Almonte was planning to use drugs that day. Shed seen a destructive pattern recently in their three-year relationship.
Recently, Jonathan has fallen into a pattern of spike use (typically defined as synthetic marijuana), which leads to mental health issues, and then he stops using spike, which intensifies the mental health problems until it is out of his system, Midlar told police.
And here's the money quote:
That concerned his girlfriend because Jonathan watches a lot of YouTube videos, including a lot of conspiracy theories and paranoid nonsense, he has a lot of stuff he doesnt want me to go near or touch, and he has tools, so I worried he might have made a bomb or something . . . Midlar told police.

(1,040 posts)That update was current as of about 9pm last night. I haven't heard anything new from the ADA, and I certainly haven't heard anything from my neighbor or her son.
One of the provisions on her release, in addition to the bond, mental health evaluation and her NOT coming back to her house right now, was a no contact order, for which I am grateful. The ADA also told me yesterday that the son wanted the guns found in his mother's home, but since they were registered to her deceased husband, the police weren't automatically going to give them to him. I don't know what the state law is regarding firearms belonging to a deceased person. If they were listed in a will that should have been probated by now. If not, they might pass to his widow, but wouldn't she have to re-register them at some point? I used to be a paralegal, but this is outside my area, so I'm going to have to do some checking.
In the meantime, I am well, but sleepy (I think I woke up every hour last night).
