Donald Trumps plan for a swift withdrawal of over half the US troops in Afghanistan comes at a dangerous time for a country officially in peace talks, but grappling with escalating bloodshed and shrinking financial support from foreign donors.
Attacks are up by 50% since negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban began in September, a recent US government report found, above average levels for this time of year.
The top US general on the ground, Austin Scott Miller, has warned that insurgent assaults are not consistent with the withdrawal agreement the US and the Taliban signed in February and undermine the ongoing Afghan peace talks.
The violence has also reportedly demoralised Afghan forces, who have been ordered to stay on the defensive as part of the peace process. Frequent Afghan government calls for a Taliban ceasefire or reduction of violence as a sign of insurgent goodwill during the talks have gone unheeded.

The time of rage is upon us. A narcissist views losing as the equivalent of death and uses revenge as self-justified form of payback.

Fact is, we will never be able to get our troops out of Afghanistan, Iraq, or anywhere else, if we are going to worry about what COULD happen after we leave. There's always going to be a risk of issues developing, not matter what we do. I'm for getting out. Should have been done long ago.

(46,067 posts)Afghanistan is loaded with Rare Earth Minerals and China apparently has bought almost all the leases to mine them. (REM are used to manufacture cellular phones. They literally are "rare" in other locations.)
Trump, being Trump, figures "If I can't get a piece of the action, I'll be damned if China makes Big Money from the acquisition and sale of those commodities."
So, pull out U.S. troops, let the standing government and the Taliban go at it. And it's hard to mine minerals with hails of gunfire, among other things. So China can't get at those rich resources until there's a truce, and that's not foreseeable.
