(18,402 posts)First of all, to inoculate the entire nation they will need both or more.
But really, Moderna has never had a drug or vaccine approved before. Pfizer is a well-established pharmaceutical company. If I had to pick one, I probably would trust the Pfizer.
But of course Moderna will be green-lighted by Trump before he leaves. Too much money invested, and too much juicy stock owned. I hope the Moderna vaccine is successful, but I also worry it could be the next Theranos.

The molecule is fragile and will always be fragile. It is therefore not likely to usurp other vaccine types. It is however with modern techniques faster to develop and so perfect for rapid initial deployment for at caregivers in controllable settings. Much has been made of its handling requirements, but what is less understood is those requirements forces the distribution through trained staff. This is even more important in a multi-dose vaccine.
This style of vaccine will be important for emergency initial use and later to deploy to developing hot-spots. However the ones coming online following will be much more suitable for general distribution as today's flu shots are.
