Melatonin a Promising Candidate for Prevention and Treatment of COVID-19

This is fairly new, but I don't know if it was already posted here.

I found it last night after looking for any updates about the possible connection between Covid and a "bradykinin storm" as was indicated by a supercomputer. That old story showed it could indeed explain the wide-range of previously confounding symptoms observed in Covid patients. (It recommended Vitamin D to help regulate bradykinin, among other predictions.)

So I found an old research article that indicated melatonin reduces nitric oxide from bradykinin, which is how blood vessels become more leaky. Then I found this very recent study too...

-----
Results from a new Cleveland Clinic-led study suggest that melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and is commonly used as an over-the-counter sleep aid, may be a viable treatment option for COVID-19.

As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the world, particularly with cases rising during what some have termed the “fall surge,” repurposing drugs already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for new therapeutic purposes continues to be the most efficient and cost-effective approach to treat or prevent the disease.

According to the findings published today in PLOS Biology, a novel artificial intelligence platform developed by Lerner Research Institute researchers to identify possible drugs for COVID-19 repurposing has revealed melatonin as a promising candidate...

I'm a "burst sleeper".
Sleep 90 minutes, up 90 minutes, sleep 60, and so on.
When feeling fatigued, I'd take 10mg of melatonin, and I'd sleep 3 to 3&1/2 hours, but fall back in 15 minutes. Then another 3 hours.
When I was working, that one night a week with a couple 3+ hour sleep periods was awesome.
That was more than I usually slept, and got those solid blocks.
But, does the opposite for you!
Must be based on body chem & metabolism or something.

The most successful sleep aid for me is to not over-sleep in the morning or nap more than 15 minutes if I am tired or reading extremely dense technical writing (run into brain fog reading and re-reading).

It's a fairly old bottle of it, so maybe it "expired"? Nonetheless, it seemed to help knock me out and I slept DEEPLY last night. I don't remember waking up at all until I finally awoke today, and I'm usually a very light sleeper who briefly awakes throughout my sleep cycles.

however, we recently got some at Costco at the request of our son and this stuff is at least as strong as most antihistamines or over the counter sleep aids I've ever used. I actually cut them in half or I have trouble waking up.

I certainly wouldn't rely on any supplements to help get us through an infection.

I'll still take precautions even if a highly-effective vaccine becomes widely available.

effectively mitigate is the body's immune reaction, which is what actually kills people in "MOST" cases & that's the "NUCLEAR OPTION" when it comes to fighting back, where it pours the immune version of the kitchen sink at it, shredding HEALTHY tissue in the process. The fact that you're alive shows that there's a STRONG possibility that it DID work. There's more than a 75% chance that it did indeed hep you, depending on your potential comorbidities & age. IF you take melatonin on a regular basis & it is something that you took BEFORE your CoV19 journey into the 9 deepest ring of hell, Yessiree, it more than likely helped you.

I also had CoV19 , beginning on December 28, 2019...Oh Lawd, the acute symptoms, which included my veryown 900lb GORILLA strapped to my chest, lasted for almost 6 months! Didn't even realise I had it UNTIL I read what the constellation of symptoms were & {{{!BLAM!}}} presumptive positive for CoV19...SMGDH I went through it BY MYSELF, meaning that due to systemic Sarcoidosis, which is most serious in my lungs, I never thought about going to hospital. I live in NorCal, near the Capital. at that time, everything except the gravely dangerous issues were taken care of via telemedicine consults.

SO, my PCP & his attending, (it's a teaching hospital),responded with a smug smile when I announced that I was 100% certain that I'd had CoV19 & then told m that I couldn't have had it that early in the American version of the Pandemic. I told his that he was WRONG & that I ABSOLUTELY had undergone that trial by plasma fire. So, he asked me to describe my symptoms...w/more than a little snark. Imagine the look on his face as U ratted off my symptoms: Anosmia, Angeusia, MYALGIA you would NOT believe, feeling like w/eavery breath, I was deadlifting a 900lb GORILLA WITH MY DIAPHRAGM...FOR 5.75-6 BLOODY MONTHS! When I finished telling him what he asked me to, BOTH of them had eyes the size of charger plates! lol They went on to ask me a VERY stupid question: "WHY didn't you cgo to ER?" WHAT tests? REALLY? Anyway, what I wanted to say is that it more than likely mitigated your immune response so that it didn't KILL YOU, by shredding your lung tissue, kidneys, brain, vascular system, your eyes, CNS & God only knows whatever else. Thank God in Heaven that we didn't lose another DECENT & SANE human being to an UNNECESSARILY harsh DEADLY pandemic ...THANK GOD!

P.S.: I take melatonin trying to maintain hormonal balance & staving off full menopause as long as possible, no to mention it's antiaging effects. I am ALSO someone who DOESN'T get sleepy after taking melatonin.

Melatonin could inhibit COVID-19-induced Cytokine Storm

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7211589/

I got fairly confident late last summer.

Recent testing has supported the theories or early studies.

Walter Reed and Johns Hopkins gave it to Trump along with D3 and zinc when he had Covid.

A sister of mine is cared for by doctors at Johns Hopkins, They have been especially keen on vitamin D3 to reduce Covid-19 intensity but also supportive of melatonin and zinc,

I've been taking zinc, D3, Vit C and Vit E to help boost my immune system.
I take turmeric and bromelain for arthritis but they're also natural blood thinners.
Covid causes a higher level of platelets which trigger blood clotting. Some blood thinners help reduce that for higher risk people.
I also take a baby aspirin which is a proven anti-platelet. The y have had some success treating Covid patients with dual antiplatelet therapy.
I also take 1.5 mg of melatonin and would boost it if I got sick.
All of that was done under the supervision of my doctor, who has been studying supplements to reduce Covid symptoms.

I'm not a doctor so take the above accordingly. I doubt you'd be disappointed with the medical research in these areas though if you look hard enough.

The same supplements taken by Dr. Fauci.

Maybe the "bradykinin storm" idea is accurate? It's what a supercomputer in TN pointed to months ago based on the input of various symptoms.

COVID-19 Storms: Bradykinin In, Cytokine Out?
https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/88560

Then there was this study from 2006:

Melatonin inhibits endothelial nitric oxide production in vitro
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16948788/
(Snip)
Thus, here we show that melatonin reduces NO production induced by bradykinin by a mechanism upstream to the interaction of Ca2+ -calmodulin with NOS.

Nitric oxide (NO) is what causes blood vessels to get more leaky.

not to keep you asleep. I find it works best when my mind is racing and I can't shut it down when I go to bed.

Also. Don't take too much. I buy 3 mg. tablets and just nibble. One tablet is good for about 4 doses. Too much gives me strange (but not scary) dreams. Those wake me up sometime. If I haven't taken any before going to bed an then wake up during the night but can't drop back to sleep, a little nibble helps me get to sleep.

Not a sleeping pill. Just tells you body that it is time to sleep.
