For 15 years, Sweden thought they were hearing Russian submarines invading their territory. They regularly investigated, sending subs, boats, and helicopters at great expense, only to come up empty-handed.

Upon investigation by a biologist, it turned out to be herring farts.

Were the mystery objects submerged UFOs, or enemy subs? Detection of these odd sonar and sounds led to theories about what they were. Settling on Russia as the cause gave way to a response byPeace Activists to deploy 'gay sailor' to deter Russian submarines https://www.cnn.com/2015/05/14/europe/sweden-russia-gay-sailor-submarine/index.html
