It's a favorite among more refined Southern Gentlemen (and we Southern Ladies like it too!) There's nothing like being out on the veranda in a white high-back rocking chair with a cardboard fan in my left hand and an ice-cold mint julep in my right hand. On hot days it's not very ladylike for me to break into a full sweat, but sometimes my forehead glistens in a most flattering way.

Ingredients

8 mint leaves
1/4 ounce simple syrup
2 ounces bourbon
Garnish: Angostura bitters (optional)
Garnish: mint sprig

Steps

In a Julep cup or rocks glass, lightly muddle the mint leaves and simple syrup.

Add the bourbon and pack the glass tightly with crushed ice.

Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside.

Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome, and garnish with a mint sprig and a few drops of bitters (optional).
