Marco Rubio: We will block Biden's Cabinet picks because Democrats are 'so unfair'

By Oliver Willis -November 18, 2020 4:45 PM

Republicans are planning to obstruct Joe Biden, despite his massive election win.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said on Wednesday that the Senate should stop the tradition of granting deference to Cabinet nominees offered by President-elect Joe Biden. Rubio justified his position by claiming that Democrats "have been just so unfair" to Donald Trump.

"There'll be a lot less deference given to presidential appointments because there was zero deference given to President Trump's appointments," Rubio told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt.

Rubio added, "There's just no way that Biden's nominations are going to be treated like they traditionally have been treated under previous presidents, simply because the atmosphere in the Senate has changed."

This commitment to obstruction, Rubio said, is "because of the way Democrats have been just so unfair."

Let’s say President Biden installs Sam Hazen as Secretary of HHS. Mr. Hazen runs HCA Healthcare, the biggest hospital system in the US. HCA already repaid the $6 billion virus relief loan the government gave it. He runs a reasonably tight ship - its debt levels are reasonable. There is absolutely no reason the Senate shouldn’t approve this man’s nomination with the greatest pleasure, except that they’re being assholes, and the public (led by the media) is going to call them on their assholery.

Similarly, Sally Jewell would also make a good Interior Secretary...I know this because she was Obama’s Interior Secretary and did a good job. Rick Perry turned out to be a decent Energy Secretary as soon as he found out the “energy” that department deals with is nuclear. (He thought they were there to harass the oil industry - which is the EPA’s job - and wanted to get rid of them for that reason.)

What he will NOT do is pick people unqualified for their roles. I mean, come on: Ben Carson at HUD? Growing up in public housing like Carson did does not qualify you to run it. If Biden wanted to give Carson a job in the administration, which he won’t, it would be something in the healthcare field.

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

I have always heard it said that this means, to get through that gate, which was a lesser gate of Jerusalem, that you had to "unpack" the baggage on the camel and repack it on the other side. Something a rich person would not likely do.

That a young, rich ruler wanted to get into Heaven and Jesus told him to sell what he had and follow.... the rich man was very very saddened by this as he had a lot of riches.

I don't think it is actually "money" that gets in our way, but the worship of all that success brings and an addiction to "more" of anything.

I'm not one who thinks a president should simply get a free pass on the people they choose for a cabinet position. Betsy DeVos, for one example. Some presidents make truly horrific choices - and as their choices affect all Americans, those choices matter. So bad choices should be opposed.

But that doesn't mean you obstruct a president as a matter of policy. Which is what republicans do to every Democratic President. Then they come up with some bullshit excuse for what they are doing, when the truth is they were going to obstruct no matter what because that's what they do. Demand compromise from the Democratic Party without ever expecting to make a compromise themselves and then pretending the Democratic Party is the unreasonable party.

Thu Nov 26, 2020, 09:59 AM
Nov 2020

Republicans are going to fight against President-Elect Biden's nominees because they are angry they lost the presidential election. This is what the Republican Party does now days. That is what they did to President Obama when he was in office. The Rubio quote at the end of the article actually describes how Republicans acted when President Obama was in office. There were actual policies that Republicans supported before President Obama said he supported those policies. Once President Obama said he supported the policy all of a sudden Republicans opposed the policy and the policy became Communism, or Socialism.

Democrats criticized Donald Trump's nominees because they supported bad policies. Democrats did not all of a sudden begin to like Trump nominees when they began to criticize Trump; Democrats began to say, because so many Trump nominees were seen as being on the fringe, if he has lost that particular individual he has really gone too far. Take for instance John Bolton, Democrats opposed Bolton because of his extreme views. Once he left the Trump Administration and began to state that he disagreed with things that were going on in the Trump Administration, Democrats began to say things like when John Bolton thinks you have gone too far, you have a big problem.
