St. Jude scientists make breakthrough and discover possible COVID-19 treatment
By Joyce Peterson | November 19, 2020 at 10:22 PM CST - Updated November 20 at 12:35 AM
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Scientists at St. Jude may have figured out how COVID-19 kills, and more importantly, how to stop it.

The virus has already claimed 250,000 lives in the U.S. and more than a million worldwide. This week, St. Jude researchers announced they think they’ve discovered a treatment.

Anyone with allergies, histamine intolerance, rheumatoid arthritis, or a compromised immune system knows what it’s like to have problems with inflammation. The swelling and pain make it difficult to breathe or to move. The same thing happens with COVID-19.

This virus triggers severe inflammation that cripples the lungs and damages other organs. St. Jude researchers say they’ve identified the mechanisms that drive COVID-19 inflammation and the medicines that can treat it.

And injecting bleach into the human body! Crap. We owe Trump an apology.

Just kidding. Short article. Hopefully the treatment is indeed effective so we can start treating people more efficiently while we wait on the vaccine.

I hope so, too. Doesn't this seem obvious, though? (I am not a doc or nurse, but when covid emerged, this was my 1st thought.)

There are many medications and treatments for inflammation. Is it "obvious" which one should be used?

All the same, good thinking on your part. The more we try to think and reason about things, the better guidance we have in our daily lives.

Great news! And I'm sharing to everyone on my email list.

Wonder if this treatment could help with the other maladies listed? "Anyone with allergies, histamine intolerance, rheumatoid arthritis, or a compromised immune system"?
I deal with all of the above & currently my arthritis is being a major problem.

Btw, I've happily donated to St. Jude for decades, knowing the money would always be used for a good cause.

St. Jude - besides the Blues, it's the best thing about Memphis.

I should've thoroughly read it b/c it stated:

Researching this treatment may also benefit those who have auto-inflammatory diseases.

My son's g.f. who has a serious inflammatory disease was very excited to hear this news. So, thanks again.

You've known about the specific treatments?
Did you read the referenced paper in the scientific journal Cell?

No mention of which inflammatory factors were higher, no mention of the drugs to treat it, and no link to the publication. It also seems very similar to what we have heard already. But St.Jude had an earlier article back in May that said that most people in an early study with severe covid do not have a cytokine storm, they have a depression of the immune response apparently from an increase natural steroid levels, the virus depresses the bodies ability to fight it by doing this.

[link:https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(20)31542-7|]

COVID-19 is characterized by excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute lung damage associated with patient mortality. While multiple inflammatory cytokines are produced by innate immune cells during SARS-CoV-2 infection, we found that only the combination of TNF-α and IFN-γ induced inflammatory cell death characterized by pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis (PANoptosis). Mechanistically, TNF-α and IFN-γ co-treatment activated the JAK/STAT1/IRF1 axis, inducing nitric oxide production and driving caspase-8/FADD–mediated PANoptosis. TNF-α and IFN-γ caused a lethal cytokine shock in mice that mirrors the tissue damage and inflammation of COVID-19, and inhibiting PANoptosis protected mice from this pathology and death. Furthermore, treating with neutralizing antibodies against TNF-α and IFN-γ protected mice from mortality during SARS-CoV-2 infection, sepsis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and cytokine shock. Collectively, our findings suggest that blocking the cytokine-mediated inflammatory cell death signaling pathway identified here may benefit patients with COVID-19 or other infectious and autoinflammatory diseases by limiting tissue damage/inflammation.

I wonder if one of the two drugs is Remicade or Humira which suppress Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)?

Potentially good news for better treatment. Thanks.

The paper is fine, this seems to represent an incremental advance in our understanding and ability to provide treatments.

WMC Action News sexes up that boring paper with the "BREAKTHROUGH" clickbait headline.

The St Jude website has more specific info that pulls it all together, for those with an interest in the mechanism discovered: https://www.stjude.org/media-resources/news-releases/2020-medicine-science-news/in-the-lab-st-jude-scientists-identify-possible-covid-19-treatment.html

Peeling away the shrouds of the Covid death mechanism(s) mystery so it can be treated quicker and more effectively is no small thing.

Thanks for posting this, SheltieLover!
