General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsPeople are f'n NUTS!!! In-N- Out burgers has come to town. I caught a news piece on the insanity.
People slept in their cars to be first in line. People were waiting in the wind and cold at dawn (grand opening at ten!). Bunched together, half without masks, no social distancing. For freakin' BURGERS?????????
I liked that chain when I was in SoCal, but no way would I freeze my butt off for one. Even without the trumplague.
And the idiots announcing this insane news did not even comment on the maskholes.

(4,723 posts)Before they opened here, people would sell them at intersections. Then when they did open, people went nuts. For donuts.

(113,216 posts)We have several local, non-chain restaurants that make wonderful burgers.i support local!
I do love the occasional In N Out but there's plenty of great burger joints where I live.
And In N Out actually is a local chain since I am in Southern California.

(24,365 posts)The only thing 5 Guys has over In-N-Out is they offer more toppings.
Their buns are crap and fall apart before you can finish and they are bloody expensive.
Their equivalent to an In-N-Out Double Double meal (Double cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato & onion with fries and a drink) is about $15.
You pay around $8 for that at In-N-Out.

(4,723 posts)I'd rather about any other fast food. I don't eat that much of it, and I certainly don't waste it on Sonic. Everything tastes like the grease they fry the tater-tots in. Even a cup of water tastes like it.

(4,723 posts)My half sister worked at a Sonic for a while, and I went to visit her at work and had a banana cream pie shake. It wasn't terrible, but it had that nasty tater tot aftertaste to it.

(25,586 posts)She brought me home a sample of all their vegan-friendly products they all tasted uniformly of cheap old cooking oil. And theres a weird sweetness to everything, especially the onion rings and pretzels.
God-awful.

(5,801 posts)Why do Sonic onion rings taste sweet?
It is because they are made with sweet onions and breaded with vanilla ice milk mix (or melted vanilla ice cream).

Retrograde
(10,132 posts)Not the actual verses themselves. And they're on the underside so you have to turn the cup upside down to read them (or hold it way up high). As proselytizing goes, it's pretty subtle. As an avowed atheist, I admire them for not getting in their customers' faces about their beliefs. And I like their minimalist menus.
The fries are decent if you eat them at the outlet as soon as you get them: they don't travel well. They do make them fresh on-site: more than once I've seen a In-n-Out worker peeling potatoes and slicing them.
Hekate
(90,624 posts)My college boyfriend was an utter devotee.
Their menu here in SoCal is always fresh, the fries are crispy, and I like them for an occasional treat. Unfortunately they became my go-to meal when we were moving 3 years ago just off the freeway and back on again with our latest carload. The dog was very happy to sit between my feet and snaffle fries. My cholesterol spiked 40 points before we were done. Since then, I love them more cautiously.

(58,785 posts)Two drive-through lanes, with home-bound traffic backed up onto and along the boulevard at rush hour. The burgers were good enough, but what I liked best was their extremely fast and professional, middle-aged male staff, clear proof that INO paid well.
Those who compare it to places like 5 Guys miss the point that In-N-Out is a fast and cheap drive-through producing very good food for the price. People who still line up in their cars at a place that's been there for nearly 40 years have their reasons.

(2,092 posts)when the Chick-Fil-A opened up. We already had a Chick-Fil-A in town, so it wasn't a new restaurant, but it was a second location. And they were running some specials for their grand opening. People lined up hours ahead of opening. The entire day the place was mobbed. Local TV even covered it. This happened pre-covid. But I still don't get it. People are willing to wait hours in line for a $1 off a mediocre fast food chicken sandwich? Really? A sandwich you can get on the other side of town in 5 minutes? What are they doing? Who are these people? Why???
doc03
(35,324 posts)their carry out is very efficient and unlike McDonald's they get your order right. As far as the chicken sandwich I
think Wendy's and Arby's are just as good. I like their waffle fries. At this time it is the only fast food place where the
indoor dining is open.

(192 posts)I tried it when I was a kid on a trip with my parents. When I moved to a state they were in a few years ago I was excited to try it again, and the burger was good. I cannot imagine treating it like a Black Friday event waiting in line for hours though. That is pretty nuts.

(977 posts)Back when I did eat burgers, the last 2 times I went to In-N-Out I got dry, tough burgers. I don't understand the cult of In-N-Out. There are much better burgers, though at a significantly higher price than In-N-Out. It's just weird. Plus they put Bible verses on the bottom of the cups.

At 4.33pm, police issued their 'final update' about the fast food line.
'The last car that will be served tonight has been "marked" and is estimated they will be served around 2:00 a.m.,' police tweeted, adding 'We anticipate continued traffic impacts in the coming days so please use alternate routes, maybe you'll find another great local eatery to support.'
At some point during the afternoon, future In-N-Out patrons were seen getting into a wild fight during their wait in a viral video.
