She abandoned her family in 1973 to join Applewhite and form Heaven's Gate. She died in 1985, but he continued with the cult until the mass suicide in 1997.

(26,257 posts)It's startling how so many of the 'prophets' were so wrong.
Also startling how these so called preachers fully support someone who continually breaks every one of their commandments and every single one of the 7 deadly sins, as often and as vigorously as his body allows.

(14,853 posts)... my sister's evangelical church later this morning.
I'd like to see if that church's head-asshole is promoting Trump. I talked to my sister this morning, and I heard her idiot husband trying to talk-up Trump in the background for all of the "good" he did regarding the pandemic!
I had to get off the phone before losing my cool.
At least my sister has never denied the reality of Covid. If not for my sister, her Bible-thumping husband might've died from Covid by now. He's also more mean-spirited than my sister, regularly watching Fox News and such. Then she plays the role of "obedient wife" as usual.

(639 posts)Religion is protected under the 1st Amendment, but many evangelicals confuse that protection with free speech. The later allowing anyone to have an opinion about anything.
An opinion does not infringe on a religions right to exist, as many right-wing Christians think it does and that is what i find funny. They are confusing faith and political viewpoints as some biblical mandate.
Why not create a modern TV sitcom about this confusion in America?
The zany antics of biblical-blanketed envangelicals confronting the science-based reality of 21st century society could, if well written, produced and acted could have similar realizations, about our societal foibles, that "All in The Family" brought.

Most Evangelicals don't read the Bible. It's a complicated book, and it's better for them to just get it digested from their crazy, greedy leaders.

(37,158 posts)From http://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/blog/antichrist/
A little context: the cartoonist, Dave Willis, grew up in a strict conservative evangelical household, and Joyce, the little kid/older kid/young woman in this progression, is sort of his alter-ego about how that religious bubble bursts for some people, and of some of the hypocrisies that manifest in the people for whom it doesn't burst.

(5,914 posts)Growing up, my biggest problem with the Antichrist story was that it seemed absolutely ridiculous that anyone so transparently evil and depraved could attain such a level of power and devotion, particularly among the "true believers".
