I believe that we've always had this thing that modified and moderated our most base instincts.

That something was our social compact.

Remove the things that make certain behaviors and beliefs "unacceptable", and anything goes.

We function as a society, because despite the fact that I want to wring someone's neck, societal norms don't accept me wringing someone's neck.

I worked with some serious fucksticks in the Navy. These were people I wouldn't trust around my children, but because society had standards of decency, ethics and morality, when push came to shove, they did the right thing.

They didn't do that because they weren't assholes. They did the right thing because society demanded that they do the right thing.

For millions of Americans, that societal norm doesn't exist anymore.

That should scare the fuck out of us, but it should also motivate us to restore our societal contract...
