Biden on federal investigations of Trump: "I will not do what this president does and use the Justice Department as my vehicle to insist that something happen."
Says he has "read about" state/local investigations, doesn't comment further.

(4,619 posts)And charge every slimy thing that comes out.
I say let Adam Schiff do it.
Remember, only prosecute folks who have done crimes.
Let's be fair now.

(18,402 posts)The best he can do is investigate and make public reports.
Lets please get off this repeat of 2008-9, when there were hundreds of daily calls here to prosecute Bush-era officials. It didnt happen then and it wont happen now. The most we should expect is for the SDNY to proceed with civil and criminal cases they have been preparing for Trumps private financial misdeeds and tax evasion.
Nobody is going to prosecute him for putting kids in cages, heinous as that was, or for failing to lead (or rather, acting to mislead) on COVID. There is executive discretion, on the one hand, and lying to the people (and perhaps even child abuse, alas) are not federal crimes. Plus, it is not something that has been done before: prosecuting former presidents.
There is so much that needs to be done. Lets not get caught in this futile revenge drama, as much as we would love for him to be punished and to set an example for the future. Unless an actual crime is unearthed ( not just horribleness), its highly unlikely to happen.

(415 posts)for things he did before he was president anyway......sure, he did lots of messed up stuff as president, but karma will pay him back for that.

When we had the house, senate and presidency in 2008 and didnt prosecute bush/cheney for war crimes or deliver a public option we lost the faith of the voters in 2010,it has taken trump and all this time to get another chance.....hopefully we learned our lesson

(938 posts)Its about drawing a line in the sand and saying this behavior is unacceptable and that the president is not above the law. If we dont start prosecuting crimes committed while in office, well keep getting unaccountable authoritarian executives, and thats a fact.

As it should be.

(37,748 posts)Despite the inaccurate inference the more melodramatic may make, he's ruled absolutely nothing out, and has simultaneously avoided allowing it to become a new unsupported allegation for the Martyred Right (which is what the right wing does best-- allege the martyrdom of their sacred cows at the hands of Democrats and pretend to be insulted when asked for objective evidence to support those empty statements... it's a tough act to miss)
My guess is Biden will dot every I and cross every T prior to taking any actions. Obama had one of the most disciplined administrations I can think of, and I'm quite certain Biden will carry on with that.

(244 posts)DOJ should not be used for political purposes. Biden needs to stay out of any of these investigations - and certainly should not be ordering them. If there are things to investigate law enforcement will do it. I have every confidence that they will, but Biden needs to stay out of it. Im a former Fed. Back then, at least in my agency, political appointees were left out of all discussions about all criminal investigations. It needs to get back to that standard. Law enforcement needs to be apolitical. Justice is blind and all that...
