Dems need to do likewise. The older the justice you appoint the more quickly the seat becomes open again, and you cannot count on being in the White House when that happens, because the office of POTUS has really swung back and forth pretty regularly since WWII.

There are plenty of highly qualified people besides President Obama who would hold the seat longer.

I wouldn't be offended at all, but I would think it was a bad strategy for regaining a non-lunatic SCOTUS majority in the medium-to-long term.

BTW, I get the impression Obama doesn't want that job, and Biden would be too considetate to put him in a bind like that by offering.

partisanship from the right. The media would find critics and the resulting notoriety would tarnish his legacy and bring his position as a judge into suspicion.

No, Obama does not need to throw himself on a sacrificial alter to appease anyone. He's doing just fine as a private citizen where he has unlimited options to do whatever appeals to him.

No seriously, I think Obama would object. There is a significant talent pool of liberal and Democratic jurists who are highly qualified to serve on the court.

For the time being I think it's better that Obama have the luxury of being politically active for the next few years. Being on the Supreme Court would leave him pretty muzzled on a range of political and legal issues.

I think we're better off with him having a freer hand in the public space

It won't happen though. Sounds like Obama's wife has already set down the law.
