Either that or maybe issue a mandate insisting that anyone present at a heavily attended religious event (and their entire household) has to self isolate at home for a couple of weeks afterwards. No work, no shopping etc. Tell them to order online or offer them food parcels if necessary.

(90,762 posts)Pretending that harming others is part of religious freedom is why so many children have been/continue to be raped and/or molested by elders/priests/assorted positions of authority within a religious institution.
It's why some think they can go after people who are LGBTQA - discriminating against them, assaulting them, murdering them, raping them.
It's why some think their racism is OK because of some scripture they've decided means it's OK to harm others because of their skin hue.
It's a big why behind misogyny - because their religion says it's OK to harm women.
And so on, and so forth.
If religious freedom means you can harm others then there is something wrong with your religion and something wrong with a law that enables you to harm others.

NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)... healthcare workers 'deciding who to treat'. It's a matter of there being more patients to be treated by staffers who are already overworked, and hospital resources that are already stretched to the breaking point.
What 'makes a difference to them' is watching more people die needlessly.
I'm amazed that you couldn't figure that out for yourself.

(1,235 posts)Youre mad because SCOTUS said they cant limit religious services. Ok..fine
No one is being forced to go to church. This virus has been around for 9-10 months. People know the risk. Biden goes to church IN PERSON every Sunday. Do you think that he wants some governor telling him that he cant go?
Church is optional, no one is forced to go. There are ways for people to do things safely and church is considered religious freedom and is actually covered in the constitution. Besides that, the positivity rate in NY is maybe 3%. In some states its 20%. NY has through the hell already
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)... is putting religious worship ahead of the public's health.
Yes, attending church services is optional for the attendee - but it's not optional for those exposed to a deadly disease by someone who chose to attend. It's going to happen - and people are going to sicken and die as a result, through no fault or choice of their own.
As any real Christian can tell you, God does not exist in a building - He is everywhere, and one worships within the heart, not from a physical space. Ergo, there is no reason why church attendance is necessary - especially when that attendance puts others at risk.
Being thy brother's keeper means exactly that. It's astounding that so many alleged Christians can't seem to grasp that simple concept.

(1,235 posts)a constitutional amendment. The governors need to pick their battles. Several religious leaders have gotten COVID and died. If that didnt wake the congregation up, nothing will. In NYC the culprits are the Orthodox Jews. They seem to support Trump and dont care if they spread the virus. If nothing else, they tend to live amongst themselves so all they are doing is getting each other sick. NYC is very segregated...I grew up there and its quite fascinating how sectioned off the city is.
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)... should outweigh all else. The Constitution also doesn't say one should evacuate before a hurricane hits - but sane people do it anyway. This is one of those times.
So the Jews are the 'culprits'?

(757 posts)Nurses/doctors are reaching their breaking point. The SC ruling now gives the green light for
mass groups to sing (spewing virus), congregate and spread the virus.
The massive evangelical church in Korea spread the virus where it had been under control. When they discovered what had happened they shut that down.
It is wrong for the self-righteous to gather in large groups and then go out and spread the virus in the cities.
But we already know these religious types don't care about others because they think they are so so special.
A. Covid Barrett is truly her name now.
People, lawmakers, who have responsibility/control our lives should be made to spend a week in the hospitals, learning how people are suffering, dying, and the horrible stress to nurses and doctors, starting with El Paso.

But for several months it has been the Orthodox Jews in NYC who have been holding these large events and it resulted in their schools getting closed. Even at the height of the pandemic in NYC I remember that thousands of them were gathered in the street for a funeral..
About a month ago they were protesting in the streets and burning their masks and waving Trump flags...it was bizarre.

Rice4VP
(1,235 posts)religious gatherings are covered under the constitution. Do I think people should be able to pack into a church? No. But they have the constitution on their side
Its just like how they couldnt prevent maskholes from voting in person. The right to vote is in the constitution. All this other stuff like bars and restaurants and ball games arent so its easier to regulate. Same goes for school...not in the constitution so school boards can run it however they want
Shermann

(18,486 posts)The time to "protest" - aka voting - was in 2010, 2014, and 2016 when too many of Democrats decided the federal courts didn't outweigh their need to teach Obama a lesson because he wasn't aggressive enough for them or to not vote for Hillary because something they didn't like about her.
Marching on the Supreme Court now isn't going to change a thing about the Court's current make up or how any of its members think or vote.
If people want to protest, they need to fight like hell to get Warnock and Ossoff elected in Georgia so that Biden can start filling federal court seats with decent judges and so that, if there's an opening on the Supreme Court, his choice doesn't get blocked by Mitch McConnell.
And then we need to get ready to fight to elect more Democrats in the 2022 - and not treat the mid-terms like a weapon to use against Biden because we don't think he changed the world in two years.

(11,912 posts)Trying to understand the logic you present.
Protesting a ruling allowing church services as a danger to public health, by suggesting large numbers of people then congregate in DC, therefore also threatening public health ?
If the argument is that church gatherings should be prohibited for public health reasons, for consistency, one would also have to argue that protests should also be prohibited for the same exact reasons, right?
Yet, both are constitutionally protected, aren't they?
Liberty Belle
(9,534 posts)A church in San Diego County has caused outbreaks and continues to defy public health orders - not even requiring masking or social distancing at indoor worship services. This sort of thing should be able to be shut down.
In our area we have had massive protests and riots during the pandemic with many thousands participating, and almost no cases traced to any of those. While not risk free (what is?) it's nowhere near as dangerous as people singing and chanting in a church, especially when many don't wear masks or socially distance, which are required at all indoor venues in CA.

(3,635 posts)You shall not have the right to endanger the health of others by holding indoor superspreader events in the name of your so called religion, while hospitals are overloaded.
This is just the beginning of this bullshit. We are going to start to see the terrible effects of this RW heavy court. Thank goodness Roberts has some sanity (he wrote the dissent) but it's not going to be enough in most cases with such a lopsided court.
