The top brass will (and rightly so) say that the orders have come from someone who is clearly unhinged and not playing with a full deck. Their oath was to the Constitution and the security of the United States, neither of which include placating the whim of a clearly unbalanced individual who can't come to terms with the result of a recent election.

I'm betting that Iran is not on a full wartime footing because our military has secretly contacted them, probably though military attachés at the UN, telling them there will be no invasion.

If so, he knows full well from them that invading there would be a mess militarily and worse politically. There is a huge dissent movement inside of Iran who despises the religious nuts that run the place, and about the only thing that could bring the young people to support their own God Squad would be an invasion from us. I can't imagine a more stupid move. Trump might want it, but neither the Senate nor the military will go for it. Trump can say "I am commander in chief, so do it!" but they will answer, "only so long as we think you are compos mentis, and ordering a strike against Iran will pretty much prove that you are not. Your call. Either way, though, you don't get your invasion."
