Is Sheldon Whitehouse under consideration for Biden's AG? Excellent choice.

He's very outspoken on twitter, which I take to mean he would be an aggressive AG.

Very strong on the environment, and has a complete handle on who is corrupting the federal judiciary.

Not sure the process to replace him in the Senate. Can we be assured a Democrat would fill his seat?

What makes you think (D) Gina Raimondo would replace him with a Republican?? She herself is under consideration for a role in Biden’s administration.

We can't afford to lose any senators at all. Sally Yates, maybe, or Preet Bharara. People who have done the job or similar before and whose selection wouldn't take any Dems out of the Senate or the House.

with the risk that a GOPer might win it? I really don't want to lose such a good senator when there are so many excellent candidates for the position who aren't in Congress.

The best candidate for AG is someone who has extensive and recent experience within the federal legal system. Whitehouse was a US attorney for a few years in the '90s and was the AG for RI after that (almost 20 years ago), but I'd rather see someone who's worked in that system recently and knows where more of the bodies are currently buried. Sally Yates should get her old job back.

That seat could go to a repuke. There is plenty of other talent out there that we do not need pick a Democratic senator.

I remember when Janet Napolitano was governor of Arizona and President Obama picked her. That was the last Democratic governor in Arizona since then.

What we should have is an AG whose DoJ evaluates all cases fairly and objectively, regardless of who is being considered and why, and that prosecutes only those cases for which they have evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, without the slightest hint of a political agenda. I'm not saying Whitehouse couldn't be objective, but I don't want anyone chosen on the basis of their ass-kicking abilities.

From: https://law.justia.com/codes/rhode-island/2019/title-17/chapter-17-4/section-17-4-9/

§ 17-4-9. Special election to fill senatorial vacancy.

Whenever a person elected a senator in congress, at any time between the day of that person's election and the beginning of his or her term of office, refuses to serve and so declares to the secretary of state, or dies, becomes insane, removes from the state, or is otherwise incapacitated, or whenever a vacancy happens in the representation of this state in the United States senate, the governor shall issue his or her writ of election directed to the several city and town clerks, or local boards as the case may be, ordering a new election of senator to fill the vacancy to be held in the state at as early a date, to be stated in the writ, as will be in compliance with the provisions of law in relation to these elections, but no election provided for by this section shall be held on any day other than the first Tuesday next after the first Monday of any month; provided, that whenever a vacancy occurs between the first day of July and the first day of October in any even-numbered year, the governor shall, unless in his or her opinion the public good requires an earlier special election, issue his or her writ for a special election to fill the vacancy to be held with the general election on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November of that year.

It seems rather unlikely a sitting Democratic senator will be chosen for Biden's cabinet with the possibility of the Senate being split 50-50 in January.
