New Rule To Allow Use Of Firing Squads, Electrocution For Federal Executions

A new rule published by the Justice Department on Friday will allow the use of different methods permitted by states, including firing squads and electrocution, for federal executions.

It’s unclear whether the rule will ever actually get used but it could potentially make it easier for the Trump administration to proceed with the wave of federal executions it plans to carry out before President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20.

The proposed rule change was first reported by ProPublica as among many regulations the Trump administration is racing to change before the president leaves office.

Five more inmates are scheduled to be executed before Biden takes office. The Justice Department hasn’t indicated it is planning on using any methods other than lethal injection, according to The New York Times. Biden opposes the death penalty and could potentially overturn the rule change.

I think I would actually rather be shot than the alternatives.

I wholeheartedly agree. First of all, for all the distasteful optics (more on that later), shooting kills more swiftly and surely than all the "humane" methods. Additionally, it provides a guilt-release for the executioners: the fabled "conscience round," a blank or wax bullet that is given randomly to one member of the firing squad, allowing each member to fire without qualms, thinking that his rifle might be the one containing that round. It also allows for plausible deniability after the fact: "It wasn't my bullet that killed him." (Incidentally, this is also a reason for the employment of squads rather than single shooters: guilt/blame is distributed, and no one really knows which shot or shots caused the death.)

I think the move away from firing squads was an attempt to avoid the gruesome spectacle of the impact of high-powered rifle cartridges on the human body. Ultimately, this is hypocrisy. For this reason, I think that if we insist on continuing to practice capital punishment, we should revert to beheading. Why pretend?

I wanna kill. I mean kill! KILL! And I was jumping up and down, yelling, « kill! kill! » and he started jumping up and down, yelling, « kill! kill! »

If he had his way, all of his "enemies" would be lined up and shot.

Honestly, what kind of dementia would cause The President Of The United States, during his last days in office, in a country in turmoil and crisis, to decide we need firing squads?

i've heard some absolute horror stories about lethal injections....... i would think if i was going to be executed i'd rather have ten guys with guns lined up and aiming at my head for the instantaneous and painless death..........

Nitrogen makes up roughly 78 per cent of Earth's atmospheric air.

Oxygen, the gas essential for life, makes up around 20 per cent.

If the oxygen level in the air a person breathes falls below ten per cent, his or her life cannot be sustained.

Nitrogen gas causes death through a process called 'nitrogen asphyxiation'.

Because the gas is odorless, colorless, and flavorless it is undetectable to human senses, so one is unaware of breathing it.

When a person typically suffocates in an enclosed environment, they gradually consume all of the oxygen present and experience a severe struggling discomfort as carbon dioxide builds up in their bloodstream and they gasp for air.

Nitrogen asphyxiation sidesteps this build up of CO2, so there is no discomfort associated with it.

To perform nitrogen asphyxiation as capital punishment, the condemned is sealed in an airtight chamber pumped full of the gas.

A painless death due to lack of oxygen expeditiously results.

People who die accidentally of nitrogen asphyxiation never know what hit them.

And death by nitrogen gas can in fact be mildly euphoric prior to rapid loss of consciousness and cessation of vital signs.
